Now all my friends know that I am becoming Catholic.

Considering they are mostly conservative Baptist ministers, it has been met with mixed reviews. My best friend is somebody I rescued from the Catholic Church when I first became a Christian years ago. It seems I’m also responsible for rescuing his brother too, after several years of trying. So it was weird.

I got an awkward… “I see…” from one.

“Well… it’s better than nothing” from another.

“Man… if I come over and see statues of Mary and rosaries and things…” from another.

“So… you just want them to tell you what to believe?” from my Roommate Matt who knows of no Catholic who is actually Catholic.

My friend’s wife was actually excited. “Oh cool man, I’m half Catholic. Let’s go to Mass.”

OK, and he would then…??? Bust them up??? Run away screaming??? Commit you to a psych ward??? Funny! 😃

I like Matt’s assessment too. Yeah, JESUS is who tells us what to believe! Well mainly anyway. He just sometimes chooses to speak through Popes.

Lol they sound kinda like my friend’s reactions to me

“Dude catholics are gay, they worship Mary!”

“Well as long as you’re a christian…”

“that’s awesome I’ve always thought catholics had really interesting beliefs”

“I think you should be Baptist but whatever…”

“I don’t think you should do it bc when your baptist you can have a relationship with God when you’re cathollic you can’t ven pray to God only your priest can”
(I tried telling soem of them that what they heard about the church were myths, but they didn’t believe me lo)

They’ve warmed up to me converting now, maybe yours will to lol

When I became Orthodox, a Baptist pastor warned me that I was one step away from being Roman Catholic (i.e. we lacked a pope). 😛
 
Congratulations, so after you came out did you choose a rite or are you planning on living a bi-ritual lifestyle? Just joking, welcome home.

My dad gave me a “You’re no longer my son!” and kicked me out of the house. But he’s over it now. Something about he was happy to see me being so happy, and all the other inlaws are contracepting so I have a grandkid monopoly! 😃
 
Good job! =) I haven’t really come out to my friends yet…I told them I’m all “going to Church” and they thought that was very strange. Most of them are agnostic/atheist (as I was until 4-5 months ago). But once they know I’m Catholic…oh my will that be interesting!

Well…if they are still talking with you then that is a good start…maybe eventually you can teach them all the misconceptions they have about Catholics…

I’m struggling with the same sort of thing right now except one friend (I thought she was a good friend) won’t talk to me now that I’m Catholic…and neither will one of my brothers…😦

I know a Divine Liturgy would be impossible as we have few, if any Eastern Catholics in NL, but do you have access to a Tridentine Mass where you live? I’m in Labrador and AFAICS I’d have to drive to Montreal to attend one.
 
Converts rock! They are usually catalysts that turn the lukewarm into flamers (just to continue the pun…)
 
Mark, congratulations on coming home. When I converted I didn’t have any of those sorts of reactions from people. My parents were pretty good with it and I had one friend from church that said to me “You realize you have to believe all that stuff they believe about angels and Mary and purgatory.”

I told him I was fine with that.

Anyhow, congrats and good luck.

Hi Mark. I’m assuming that you don’t have a wife or girlfriend, which is probably a good thing right now, because your conversion could have caused problems in your relationship. I know that it did between my ex girlfriend and I, since she was a Southern Baptist. Just study as much as you can, and try your best not to chicken out at the end of RCIA like I did back in 2009. You may want to study Lent before it arives, because if you’ve never observed it before, it can come as a culture shock if you’re not prepared for it. Abstaining from meat on Fridays was the hardest thing for me during Lent, so I recommend that if you think you’ll have a problem with it, consider practicing it on some Fridays before Lent actually starts.
