Well the book is called, Looking for Alaksa.

No, not the land mass either, but a girl.

Well in the book, it does have scenes of pornographic writing or sexual behavior.
Now, I am more than likely being very scrupulous in matters like these, but when I come in contact with writing, I just try and skip the part until the book gets back to a, at least decent part.

I may have a sudden impure thought to go along with it, but I recognize the though, and I immediately close the book for a second to say a Hail Mary or a prayer to Jesus. I am almost done with the book and this is the last book I have to read, and I do not want to pick up another one and start reading it, so once I get done with it, I’m done with it forever.

The story line is great, just wish for the bad parts to end. I doubt any mortal sin since I always skip the bad parts and reject any impure thought, but the impure thoughts come often but I always reject them or think about something else.

What are your opinions about what I should do? Probably venial, but your thoughts?

Just finish the book and confess any bad thoughts you’ve had.

I’d say you aren’t sinning because a) you didn’t seek out this book, it’s for school, b) you try to avoid the thoughts it’s stimulating. Our human mind is a mystery, we do not always control our thoughts.

But I am nOt a priest just a sinner.

I had to read this way back in middle school. Honestly, even without these sections, the book isn’t very good.
I doubt this is going to be the last book with ‘bad’ subject matter that you end up having to read in school. Since you have to read it for school, I’d say it’s not necessarily sinful if you read it with the right mindset. That being said, if you feel certain that this book (or any other book) is impeding your Christian lifestyle, then it might be worth it to mention that to whoever assigned the reading that you take religious/moral issue with it.

If you have to read it. And you have no choice. Saying a Hail Mary is good. Our lady appreciates your perserverance. But if you picked it and you have to finish it by a deadline it’s o.k. but it is mortal if you enjoy it the scenes and try to constantly go back to them and dont care then itns a sin.

It sounds like you’re doing a fine job of attempting to banish any impure thoughts this book is causing, but the irksome thing to me is that you have to read it in the first place. In the city where I live, and many others, the public school teachers are required to provide students with options if the assigned reading is contrary to their religious beliefs. If it happens again, explain how you feel to the teacher and ask if you can make a substitution.

At the very least you are putting yourself in a near occasion of sin.Pornography is intrinsically evil and is to be avoided at all costs. No grade is worth your soul. Quit reading!
