The purpose of the private revelation is to deter and give thought to people who may have a recourse to do something illicit. Such as being a writer and writing terrible, sinful stories…versus…using that talent to write something that glorifies God in some way.

Purgatory does sound scary until you read/think about Hell then it sounds a much better option.
