I suppose we all get selfish and jealous a lot. It could almost be seen as a survival mechanism (he who has the food will not starve, thus the selfish squirrel will live the longest), but for us humans it’s a sin, and a pretty painful one; after all, who loves being jealous and selfish, wanting things they can not have?

I’m sick of being so selfish! Everytime I go to the store, I day dream about owning stuff I can’t afford. I surf the web, browsing objects out of my price range. I envy family and friends, who have objects I don’t and can do things with them that I can not (like record TV with their TiVos and play music with their iPods).

I also find myself envying the attention others get, the talents they have and the acheivements they have earned. And what’s really sad is sometimes I envy the bodies of others, that look much more attractive than mine! 😦 What a sin! What a tragedy!

All this selfishness and envy is certainly not good for the soul, and it’s certainly not fun to live with!

I pray that I will stop being so selfish, and that when I look at other people, I will look for the love of God within them all, instead of merely being jealous of them somehow.

I wouldn’t mind giving up everything I own for the glory of Heaven. I wouldn’t mind parting with it now if I was on my way to see God. Yet, if I’m so selfish, this can’t be totally correct. Even now, I am saving up money to buy more junk that I don’t really need.

We must all look beyond material objects, and look to God, for that is why we live. Not to collect as much money before we die, or to even be remembered for pointless acheivements (like winning the lottery).

I’ve met many people who are trying to accomplish something, trying to fulfill some dream, like to write a novel or to get some particular high paying job. But if God is not part of it, the dream is selfish and wrong. And it’s very sad the selfish dreams so many have (inlcuding me, of course).

God is the most important thing in life!

I’ve forever wanted what the “neighbors next door” have - a nice car, nice furniture, a bunch of new clothes, extra money to buy my kids stuff. But whenever I get to that point, I immediately think about all the wonderful gifts God has given me in my life: ability to support my family in their basic needs, the love I have with them, sharing with my family and friends in love and laughter. It brings me back to praising the one Creator who gave these gifts so freely to me, and draws me towards a more prayerful life.

I, too, wish (especially now) that I can give up all my material things and live in a cloistered convent. But I remind myself, also, that I have been lead to this holy vocation as a wife and mother, and it is God’s will that my life’s work is partly this task. So I take my blessings as it comes, and just try to enjoy the simple things that God has given me in my life. 👍

Dear “InSearch,”

… and may also be a sin because of the hidden intention that only God sees in our heart … even as the world applauds us.

A good reminder for us all. Thanks.

PS, I like your signature line!! 🙂

**The Gospel reading for October 12, 2005 - **Luke 11:37-41

The following is a reflection for today’s reading as found at Presentation Ministries.

"These men…exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator." –Romans 1:25
From the garden of Eden to the present day, man and woman have been captivated by God’s good and beautiful creations. He created things to point back to Himself (Rm 1:20; Wis 13:5). Many are unable to get past the beauty of creation to find God the Creator, and so they worship and serve the creature (Rm 1:25). In Western society, the human body is worshipped. “Images representing mortal man” and woman (Rm 1:23) are worshipped instead of God. Billboards, TV shows, movies, and fashion advertisements, among others, glorify the fairness of the human body (Wis 13:7). As a result, many are “distracted by what they see” (Wis 13:7) and forget God, Who created all human bodies.
