I have these spiritual ups and downs every once in awhile due to a lack of zeal or too much overzeal for the Catholic Faith.

I’m going to go see a spiritual director next month so I can stop “going around in a crazy circle” spiritually!!!

Does anyone else go through this because I’m getting sick and tired of it!

I want to try and type this as carefully and diplomatically as I can; without malice and without sarcasm. OK? … Have you considered seeking medical attention? The mood shifts you demonstrate on this forum seem to indicate to me you seriously need to get professional medical advice to go hand in hand with your spiritual advice.

The mood shifts I indicate are over eggagerated and I don’t mean to do that but really, I’m not THAT emotional. I am emotional but not to the point where I have to go see Mr. Doc. Though I should stop because people are starting to think I’m http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/spezial/Sarge/Rotate_anim.gif

…but thanks for your advice.😃

Paris…

Ok then…try and stop the emotional roller-coaster. Seriously, if you find it difficult - then it is not melo-drama on your part, but a real problem. In which case you need a regular counselor - not a spiritual director.

As to the spiritual aspect - you seem to be relying on emotions to dictate your spiritual ‘mood’. Which are two separate things. Faith is faith - it simply IS - it is not in any way connected to an emotional sense of high or low - it just IS. Walking by faith is trust, complete dependance.

Spiritual ‘dryness’ is NOT a lack of ‘good feelings’ or an abundance of ‘bad’ feelings. dryness is more of a lack of comfort from the Holy Spirit - along with a few other things.

Spiritual directors are more for sorting out your spiritual walks GOAL, not the emotional problems encountered along the way - they would probably tell you to seek out a priest or a counselor - although I mat be wrong about that - i would first seek the advice of your priest before spending the $ on a spiritual dorector.

Peace

Paris, please don’t be discouraged. While others may advise you get psychological treatment, what you are experiencing is normal for many folks! I experienced it myself.

We’re living in such an instant-gratification world that people get bored easily. Even though I meditate and work in the silence of a seminary library, I still get distracted and experience ups and downs in my faith. But no matter how I feel, God is always there. Now, you may very well have psychological problems–I don’t know–but if all you are experiencing as far as symptoms is a hot and cold feeling for your faith, that is normal! Don’t turn away from God or feel like you’re somehow lacking! You are trying to find that happy medium.

I tend to be a very black-and-white person–I get all gung-ho about things in my life, only to drop them when the feeling subsides. What you need to find is a constant. A not overly zealous state, but not lukewarm either. Whatever happens, God is there. When you find that quiet peace–and you will–let go and let God.

You’re not alone.

Did you ever see the Movie “Parenthood” with Steve Martin?

The very last scene is about how crazy life is…like a rollercoaster, and really the crazy parts are what life is all about. So if life is like an emotional rollercoaster, just sit back and enjoy it. Its how we know we are alive!
