Ok…I’m fasting today, but I’m STARVING!!! Just had to say 😦

I’m at work and I can barely concentrate. I am going to eat at lunch time and save my snacks for before and after tonight’s Mass, so I can sleep tonight!

Can you drink water? If so, try drinking sparkling water. Make sure it’s plain water and doesn’t have sugar or other additives. I think Pierre is plain sparkling water. It’s the same as drinking water but the carbonation will give you a little bit of a fuller feeling. I don’t think that would be cheating would it?

Feeling like we’re starving on just one meal and two smaller ones for just one day may help us have compassion for those who are truly starving and go for weeks with little or no food.

I hear you, Serap! I worked 12 hours today, and my coworkers were eating pastries and a variety of snacks all day, and offering them to me. I didn’t tell them I was fasting, I just refused the snacks. Part of the fast, for me, is suffering in silence - I have a tendency to share my problems with others and seek sympathy, so I figure using the fast to get sympathy would be cheating for me.

Oh, but I wanted bananas all day. I decided to have a banana and toast for breakfast, so I bought a bunch of bananas last night. They’re so perfectly ripe and delicious… just the right texture, not too mushy, but not too starchy like they are when they’re underripe. I brought some to work in my purse, to serve as a light dinner, but then the secretary bought us tuna-and-rice-balls as a snack at work, so I figured that would make a good dinner instead. I gave the bananas to my students, who ate them in front of me and I could smell them…

It’s Thursday here now. It’s been Thursday for half an hour. I have eaten two bananas so far on Thursday. 😊

Last night, I ate chocolate, ice-cream, cookies…everything I could get my hands on…You guessed it…I"m giving up sugary food for Lent 😃

Good reminder that there a people starving elsewhere in this world and I am fasting for two days during Lent!! 👍

Receive Communion frequently during Lent. God is the the ultimate fulfillment of all our desires, even our desire to eat frequently.

I’d been fasting one day a week during Ordinary Time this year, so I’ve almost gotten used to it. I think the biggest hurdle for me now is to not gorge myself on the following non-fasting day.

I hear you too serap…but you know, it could be exaggerated from the sugar you ate last night…your blood sugar level dropping and the craving for more. Sugar and high carbs beget more…I have learned that! lol

I think as Lent goes on, just from a physical standpoint alone, your body will crave less and less, and your blood sugar will taper off. I agree with the poster that from a spiritual level, this can create in us a greater level of appreciation for the abundance we have here, and have compassion for those who don’t.

My family and I are giving up eating out for the entire 40 days…right now it seems easy, by next week, I’ll want to go out I’m sure. But, that and fasting will help me to grow in holiness I think.

Have a very blessed and reflective Lent, Serap!:hug1:

I can remember last Good Friday when the manager thought it would be a great idea to order a ton pizza for lunch.

…and of course they’re buying lunch at work today for someone’s birthday!

ok…i’m eating and it ain’t pretty.

tuna salad and bean salad. i’m eating high protein to keep my sugar levels down, so i don’t get hungry again too soon.

where’s my chocolate!!! I almost bought a chocolate bar today and was like DOHHH!!!

What is so strange to me is that I have not thought of donuts in I don’t know how long and TODAY I am dying for a donut. And a double cheeseburger… another food I would not normally eat. You would think that Satan would be busy with thing more imporant things rather than putting food ideas into my head?

I too am working a twelve hour day. I went the first seven before I had lunch and it was tough. I guess I’ll be hungry for Mass and going to bed, but I usually have no problem sleeping on an empty stomach. At least we had fried fish, of some species, for lunch. Not the best meal, but it works.

Yeah, I know. The only day of the week I ever crave hot dogs is Fridays. (And today, of course.) The rest of the time, the very idea of them makes me want to gag. 🤷

That’s JUST what I mean! What is up with that?!!! 😊 You’d think Satan would be busy planning a war or a new abortion clinic or something and not whispering “hot dog” in your ear.

Might be one of the lesser but no less troublesome demons doing that job. I’ll bet there’s one little guy in Hell whose sole job is just that: whispering “hot dog” in the ears of Catholics during Lent. Guess we can refer to him as “the hot dog demon”.

I hear a big pan of brownies whispering to me right now!! 😃

Paul

or maybe a cheesecake… a whole one!

Really, after Orthodox fasts, Catholic fasts for me are a piece of cake 🙂
It was really hard to abstain not just from meat, but from milk products, eggs, cheese during almost every wednesday/friday per year! And, 4 long fasting periods per year…
And I was really scrupulous and trying not to eat food that may contain some milk/eggs, just like pieces of cake or cookies or alike. It was making me crazy. I was eating potatoes with onion almost each day during orthodox Lent 🙂 and I was feeling myself like a traitor of faith when I was adding an egg or two into ukrainian-style potato pankakes…
But I managed to survive, somehow 🙂
I think I would try to avoid meat at weekdays, at least when I’m at home and have a choice what to eat 🙂
Yesterday I’ve had one lunch with salad and fish, and was drinking tea frequently. And, ate some cookies (6 of them!) I hope the cookies can be count as “small meals” and I didn’t break the rules 🙂
Many my friends give up sweeties during Lent, but I need tea-with-something often. So I’d better will avoid meat and wouldn’t think of myself as about unhappy and starving 🙂

Same thing happens to me! I don’t even eat that much red meat but on Fridays, the smell of meat coming from a restaurant tempts me like no other. And then my (non-Catholic) DH bought Cadbury Creme Eggs today. I don’t even like those things and I really wanted one.

I guess the point is that when it comes to separating you from Jesus, there is nothing that Satan will not stoop to, even if it’s tempting you with hot dogs. 😉 I believe that is one reason fasting is so good for us. Conquering those tiny little food temptations strengthens you to conquer the big temptations in life.
