Please help!
The Church which I attend (Church of Scotland) has allowed a gay man to be ordained.
I was already considering converting to the Catholic faith, and now I feel certain I should.
However, I’m nervous that my parents would be angry with me for doing this and am not sure what to do now. Thanks in advance!

I truly believe that the Catholic Church should definitely be your ultimate goal, however it may be wise, depending upon your age, to wait until you are of majority. Having said this, I think it is great that you are looking in the correct direction. God bless you in your journey.
In His service,
Stan

I’m not sure how old you are, but following God’s commandment, you should honor your father and your mother. How do they feel about the priest issue? Could they understand why you are making this decision, and learn to accept it? Sometime eventually, you must be your owm person and be whom God wants you to be. Think about Jesus when he was found in the temple. He haad some explaining to do too, but the holy family got through it, and I have a feeling yours will too.

Prayers and Blessings!

“Do not try to please everybody. Try to please God, the angels, and the saints. These are your public. If you are afraid of other people’s opinions, you should not have become Christian.” (St. John Vianney)

If you’re still a teen, you can still learn about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith, but I suggest that you honor your parents until you’re 18, if they are overly-distressed by your being received into the Catholic Church. In the meantime, pray unceasingly (for yourself and others), continue to work on your conversion in Christ, love your parents and others, and continue encountering Christ through prayer, the liturgy, Scripture, and serving others.

You’re not stuck. 🙂

Thanks for all your help guys!
I think my parents would prefer me to join the Church of Scotland, but I don’t want to be in a moral compromise and feel comfortable with the Catholic Church’s teachings, so perhaps it would be easier for me to convert now?

Honoring Father and Mother does -not- mean refraining or waiting on becoming Catholic, but the very opposite.

Don’t join the Church of Scotland. 🙂

However, prudence may have one conceal becoming Catholic for a time, and study as much as possible before anything overt if one anticipates too great opposition… It sounds like in your case however overt may be fine… if there is no estimation that there is going to be great trouble, then one should talk to them about it when one is capable of speaking about it decently.

How one deals with it depends to a degree of course on how old one is.

One should pray and study the faith no matter what of course. 🙂 Amen. Amen.

Here’s a Welcome home. 🙂

Ave Maria.

possibly it is easier for you to convert now. However, are your parents completely against Catholicism? no matter your age it would still be rough to try to convert to something that your parents completely oppose. and however much people say that words don’t hurt, they do hurt.
actually one of my friends (I guess I should actually call him my boyfriend but he is much more to me than just casual dating) is going through the same thing you are going through, and he’s a lot older than I am. I refuse to say the actual age difference. just know that it is not normal. in this day and age anyway.
an odd thing about this though is that my friend is Scottish too. and I met him on this forum. crazy huh? 🙂 (trust me I have had a lot of weird events surrounding this relationship, not to mention that my Saint actually helped for us to meet:eek:)
Ok, I really should go to sleep now. 3 in the morning. I must be crazy.

Thanks Shin! 🙂
I’m not sure if my local Catholic parish run any courses, however a new church has been built close by to me. Should I contact the priest and ask him for a course?

I don’t think that they would be that much against it, they have said in the past that they would be happy just for me to be thinking about joining a church. However, they did say that I should wait until I am older.

Thanks Shin! 🙂

I would say so, even though you didn’t ask me. it really wouldn’t hurt to start learning more. you may find that it truly is the religion that you want to be in. I am happy that you are even considering it. also read this forum. especially the questions answered by the apologists.

Thanks Shin! 🙂

If you feel you can do it properly, do so. 🙂

I do not know how much free reign you have with your free time, you must be honest remember.

Regardless be certain to study the faith on your own, and check what you are taught against the catechisms and writings on the faith by the popes and saints. 🙂 By this method, which you will have to continue through your life, you will grow in knowledge and love of God.

And remember to pray for God’s help fervently! 🙂

ah, i understand.
do you mind if I ask how old are you?
yep I’m just starting to some freedom from my parents and I’m almost 19. in 8 days, wow. didn’t really realize that.
but I have been born into the Catholic church so I can’t really understand from personal experiance. but my uncle has the same policy with his children (they have not been baptized into any religion. it is their choice on which religion they will choose. and my oldest cousin is getting very close to that choice)

I’m 15, but will be 16 later this year, so I guess this is where it stems from.

yep, i understand now.
well you can send me anything if you need to talk. I’ll be here. somewhere.
and I’m sure you know by now that you can post almost anything on CAF. People will pray for you and encourage you. and if you need help with anything, they give good advice.

Thanks! 👍
Good to know that I have support with this!
you do indeed have support with this. I have seen a lot of religions, I have researched a lot of religions and though I may be a little too biased i think the Catholic church is THE church. after everything that has happened to me (good and bad) I still think it is the one to save us all.
Maybe I’m just nuts, but I believe in it.

The choirs of angels and saints rejoice as Heaven is opened to a lamb returning home! 🙂

Robert, I can understand your parents wanting you to wait before joining the church. Perhaps they will not object to your attending mass at the Catholic Church. You will not be able to receive the Eurcharist until you are received into the church, but you can still attend. Also, pray for your parents’ conversion.
