I'm surprised Mormons don't pray for the dead

oh, i understand now. So your asking Mary or a saint to pray to god for you. So your just asking them to pray for you and your not asking them to tell god to forgive you. Isn’t that still being a moderator and doesn’t that still distract from the trinity and Christ? Isn’t that Christ’s job?
Do you believe that you praying for your grandfather distracts from God? Do you believe that you are doing Christ’s job of moderator?

Also when you say “Trinity and Christ”…Jesus is one Person of the Trinity. Jesus is God. So saying “Trinity and Christ” is redundant. It would be like saying God and Father.

again, those are 2 different things. When i’m praying about my grandfather, i’m praying directly to god. I’m not creating another mediator. This is just simple concept.

These are just the differences in the Catholic church and my religion.

Again, your concept of the trinity is different then mine, so for me to say that praying outside of the trinity or Godhead is distracting from Christ is not redundant.

No, they are not different. When I pray to a Saint, I am asking them to pray for me. I believe they pray for me, which is the same as you praying for your grandfather.

You have no concept of the Trinity. As of late, Mormons have taken this word and redefined it. What you believe has nothing to do with the Trinity.

And yes, I understand that you do not believe Jesus is God. You believe Jesus is **A **god, but not God.

how is saying that i’m praying to god and your praying to a saint the same? Those are 2 completely different things. I’m not praying to my grandfather and i’m not praying to anyone else for my grandfather. This is a simple concept, even you catholics can back me up on that.

Is it 2 different things or the same thing

Talking about the trinity is going to create a who different discussion and its a huge discussion.

And no, i believe that Christ is God, even the very son of God.

Yes, those are two completely different things. Are you not following or comprehending? Let me make it simple.

1-You ask a friend or relative to pray for you.
2-They pray for you.

Comparatively:

1-I ask a Saint, who if you like you can think of my Aunt or Uncle, and I ask them to pray for me.
2-They pray for me.

You pray to God.
I pray to God.
Your friends and relatives pray to God.
The Saints pray to God.

If you don’t like the word “pray”, then you can say I ask the Saints to pray for me. As that is all I am doing. Perhaps you have heard a Catholic prayer to Mary? “Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.” You see, it is asking Mary to pray for us.

so if you are in church and during fast and testimony meeting someone stands asks everyone to pray for them as they are going through a hard time does that take away from christ’s role as mediator? do you believe they shouldn’t ask others to pray for them? what about the prayer rolls in the temple? do people who write those out distract from God?

and why don’t mormons pray to Christ? (or the holy spirit for that matter) isn’t he deserving of our worship? shouldn’t we bring our petitions to Christ as our mediator?

ok, thanks, they are 2 completely different things although i see what your belief is. I would disagree with it, but i understand the concept. We do say he is the mediator in all our prayers. That why we say “in the name of Jesus Christ”

Yes, that is a different discussion, and one we have had many times and I am sure we will have again. (We, being people on this forum.)

So I will start a new thread, because you say you believe Christ is God, yet you believe He is not One. I would like for you to explain this because it makes no sense.

The answer is found in your family. Its the exact same as your father and his son. Thats the concept.

yet you don’t pray TO christ

They are united in every single thing. Desires, thoughts, actions, in their work, their purpose. And they have the same title. God.
You pray to the father, in Christs name.

“United” does not denote similarity in kind, or degree. Is there an ontological difference between god (the father) and Christ? Between man and Christ?

According to LDS doctrine, no. See “eternal progression”. Man is of the same species of god (the father), and Christ.

Smacks of henotheism.

why does your profile say your religion is n/a? Are you trying to tell us something?

It also smacks of the Arian heresy that the Church condemned at the Council of Nicaea in 325. The Council declared what was always believed by the Christians–that the Son and the Father are “consubstantial”.

So a commandment isn’t enough, do you need more? one question i have though is if you do spend your time praying to saints, do you ever have time to actually pray to god? Just wondering.
Have you ever been to Mass? We only invoke the intercession of Mary, the angels, and saints twice in the entire Mass. The rest of the Mass is directed to God.

As for my own personal prayer life, I spend most of my time praying to God. After I have presented my requests to God, I then ask Mary and the saints to pray for me.

Do you ask other people here on earth to pray for you? Why? Isn’t that Christ’s job? Doesn’t asking other people to pray for you distract from the trinity?

i haven’t done my profile cause i don’t come here often or post often. It wasn’t a top priority. Sorry.

Let’s get back to the topic. Why don’t Mormons pray for the dead? Don’t they have faith their prayers might help those who are dead accept the gospel in the next life? If it doesn’t help to pray for the dead is there any point in praying for the living?
That’s a good point. Since they baptize the deceased by proxy, and believe that the dead can respond to the gospel, it would make sense to say, “Please God, let my (dead) grandmother respond to the gospel.”
