As long as one party enthusiastically embraces unrestricted abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research and the rest (not to mention gay marriage), I really don’t see any moral equivalency at all.

I’ve frequently gone to the mat on the water-boarding issue (against) and I was optimistic about the President’s promise to close Gitmo at the beginning of his administration but as we now know this administration’s policies in these areas are not much different than the previous one, and on some issues, such as drones, the current administration is actually worse.
Drones, etc, are not the only thing. To me, when people cite their concern for “social justice”, they’re simply justifying their support for the Democrat party, based on a myth so old it should have been discarded long ago.

Because the truth is, the Democrat party has done no more for the truly poor than has the Repub party and, in this particular administration, it has actually harmed them.
Where is the “social justice” in “cash for clunkers” a program whereby people wealthy enough to buy new cars got government money to do it? Remember that the “clunkers” were destroyed; the very transportation on which the poor depend.

Where is the “social justice” in pushing 17 million more people onto Medicaid under Obamacare, when providers are already limiting the Medicaid patients they will see?

Where is the “social justice” in taking $700 billion out of Medicare funding so that the chief Medicare actuary says Medicare reimbursement will be even lower than Medicaid?

Where is the “social justice” in increasing reimbursement for “well care”, mostly used by wealthy and middle class people, and decreasing it for “chronic care”, a particular need of the poor?

Where is the “social justice” in saving plush union pensions with taxpayer money while not increasing SSI by so much as a dime?

It’s all a myth. Some people who tout “social justice” really think that somehow supporting the Dems will bring about improvement for the poor out of ignorance. Some know it’s just code for “Vote Democrat”.

Tell your family members that the “poorest of the poor” is an innocent baby it its mother’s womb - it has no possessions, no money, and no security if the mother is abortion-minded. Social justice must include working against abortion, as the #1 priority. Everything else is just an excuse.

I’m trying to witness to the gospel of life, but many of my family members are trying to force me to accept the culture of death in the form of “catholic social justice.” They argue that some who “claim” to be pro-life don’t do a thing to help the poor, choosing instead to cut programs like fuel assistance and food stamps. They try to tell me that they see “the seamless garment” of helping the poor and the working class. But how can they for the poor if they won’t defend the most fundamental right of them all-life? I hope you can answer me on this.

Also, how many pro-life politicians are in favor of the death penalty? I’d like to know that, too.
I was unaware human existence began with both civilization and an extensive publicly funded welfare system?

The welfare system in developed nations and abortion are two separate issues. I say that because “poverty” in the developed world today is largely relative poverty (a term economists) and not absolute or abject poverty. I’m on V.A. non-service connected pension as my only source of income and therefore regarded as poor in the United States. But that is only relative to the U.S. middle-class and the upper-classes. I in fact live in more material comfort than the rural - and urban - poor in developing nations.

Luxury is also a relative thing. I live in more luxury than the kings and queens of Europe centuries ago. Many of them ate with their hands - as did Jesus - and none of them enjoyed running hot and cold water, gas stoves, electric lights, and heating and AC as I do. I don’t have a car but I ride the public bus - not a donkey.

I’m against the death penalty because I think it’s prone to mistakes and innocent people can - or possibly have - been killed. But the death penalty used on adults is kind of like the issue of whether or not an adult should have sex with an adult or a small prepubescent child. Or questions like, “Do you fight someone your own size or pick on someone smaller?”

But in my mind there are other issues to consider beside that of abortion. For example: nuclearizing outer-space. If some Republicans have their way they would keep inching the world closer to apocalyptic annihilation. Which means pregnant women will die and the women giving birth will give birth to babies with birth defects and mental retardation.

Both parties are not corrupt. This is a standard liberal Catholic defense in an attempt to rationalize their liberalism. People pretending to be centrist… when they aren’t.

The Democratic party is corrupt. The Republican party may be overrun with wealthy people, and you may hate wealthy people, and you may disagree with their economic philosophy, but there is not a single solitary issue on the Republican platform that actually contradicts Church doctrine.
Even if that is the case (I don’t know that it is)… Pope John Paul II certainly didn’t want the U.S. and her Western allies to invade Iraq and he made a vigorous diplomatic effort to stop the invasion as I understand it.

Whether or not Saddam was a bad man or committed great evils (he did) - the U.S. led wars and former sanctions on Iraq were far more catastrophic on that nation and it’s people and unborn children than 9-11 was on Americans or New Yorkers.

Frankly, I don’t think abortion during the very early stages of pregnancy comes with the same intent of rage - or possibly malice - that bayonet combat, close quarters battle, or dropping bombs on populations of people, destroying hospitals, grocery stores, and infrastructure does.
