I had always thought that when we died we were judged and sent to one of three place. Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. I understand that some Christians believe that when we die we are put in state of sleep until the return of Jesus. At Mass we sing the song “I will raise you up on the last day” what does this mean? Also do any major Christian religions believe that state of sleep until the return of Jesus?

The majority of people will not be saved, and at the particular judgement (at the moment of death), their souls will descend into hell.

Those who need to be purified will under purgatory after the particular judgement and then will enter heaven after being fully purified.

At the end of time, at the general judgement, we will receive our bodies back (only our souls enter into heaven/purgatory/hell), and thats what the ‘raise you up refers to’. Those who enter into life will receive a glorified body, but the reprobate will receive a foul, corrupt one.

Thank you for a very clear and easy to understand answer. 👍
