I'm worried my confession wasn't good enough

Yes, but he’s probably said that to others who have withheld.

I’m just worried because

a. I wasn’t sure how much to tell about the sin (I posted exact details about what I didn’t say a few posts ago)

b. I thought about needing to say it, but I was so focused and scared it was a split second thought I couldn’t really go back on in the time I was in there

I’m probably being scrupulous but would also like to know from someone who is experienced in this matter. I’m sorry if I’m being frustrating!
The important part is this: When a priest hears your confession, he is acting in the person of Christ (in persona Christi).

When he says, “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”, your sins are forgiven.

Be at peace.

Alright, thank you. 🙂

I guess God knows I’m truly sorry and I did to the best of my ability confessing my sins and at least got the most important parts out, and was forgiven.

Alright I guess I should give my specific example.

I told him I had looked at impure pictures and videos, but forgot to say writing as there was writing also. One time there was something with gay in it, but i didnt say that at the confession because of how scared and ashamed i was. do i need to go back to confess it? im not even old enough to drive and i would rather keep this private from my parents and move forward, so im just terrified and worried and don’t know what to do.

im kind of a perfectionist and i worry that God would say once I died that my confession of my worst sins was not valid ( i dont intend to make any more mortal sins so i really hope these were the worst! )
Sorry, I start confused 😃 Was it just the words or was it actually describing the activity to provoke a lustful response? There’s a difference. I would say though that just saying you looked at impure images would cover that sin, because that’s what it was even if it was conveyed using words instead of pixels. Hope that makes sense.

But don’t ever be embarrassed to ask your parents to take you to confession. I’m sure it fills them with joy that you want to be right with God. And not many teenagers go to confession on their own sadly, so your parents raised you well.👍 I’m saying this because you know better than any of us what you did or didn’t do, and if it’s weighing down on you, I would just go back and have peace. And there’s no need necessarily to tell your mom why you want to go, just say “Hey mom! Can you take me to confession?”

Hope that helped a little

It was just the words, but that’s the part I’m not worried about, but I left out the part about there being gay stuff. 😦 I’m not sure if that is covered in what I said.

The problem with that is we just went to confession and my mom would catch on something is up, and I’d lose her trust when I know I am now 100% capable of not committing the sin again. (It’s been a while and I have no intentions of it after scares like these!)

You’re not being frustrating don’t worry. We’re here to help:thumbsup: I’m glad you care so much, it’s a good thing! Just don’t forget once you’re absolved, it’s gone. Which is a really awesome feeling.

Don’t worry, that gay part, again falls under impurity. Its not a separate category. So your good!

You have to tell some details in confession, but in this case I don’t think the type of pornography matters because all porn is sinful. The gender or what’s happening doesn’t change the essential gravity of it. Again I hope that made sense.:o

Fear and uncertainty, but I didn’t think it through.

What I withheld was an extra detail that I would have given if asked, but what I’ve read seems vague on how detailed we must be.

Do I still go back? I confessed the general sin.

I’m so happy you ask that question, and I think you got some good answers, so I won’t give mine since I’m new to coming back to the catholic faith. I will say, that I couldn’t remember all the mortal sins I commited and I’m sure the list would have been long.

I did the best I could though…Afterward the priest annointed me because I’m also disabled, etc. and was told that with the annointing I was forgiven for all past sins. I to feel guilty because I think I left out certain things, but I remember God’s grace, and then I just talk to Him about it. He makes me feel so totally cleansed. I hope this has helped:)

This did help, thank you. 🙂

I guess we need to remember that Confession is a blessing to help us learn to avoid sins, and the Priest is definitely an aid in that official ‘blessing’ away of the sins, but ultimately it is the power of God that forgives us.

Since my intention was not to forget that detail, and I didn’t really intend to, I guess I’m okay.

As for you, if you can’t remember, that’s not your fault! It’s a memory thing, so you shouldn’t be held against.

I think what counts is going out to confession and wanting to amend your life. 🙂

I agree with the majority of people here who have said that you should be at peace about this, however I have a suggestion for your own peace of mind.

As you know, a priest can’t hear confession over a phone, but he can give advice. So, my recommendation is that you call the parish office and ask to talk to the priest. Insist that it be the priest, for a personal matter, and explain that it’s a quick question about a confession, and won’t take long. You probably won’t be able to get through to him immediately, but he will call you back. Then when he calls you, be brave and tell him exactly what your concerns are.

If you are unable to talk to this priest, then try the Cathedral. They probably have a duty priest on call.

As you know, there is really no need for the shame that caused you this problem, and a priest will be very understanding when you talk to him.

I’m just so unsure as to what to do.

it doesn’t seem like there’s any clear answer as to if my confession was specific enough.

Can I just confess this at my next confession and say I wasn’t specific enough?

This wouldn’t be til advent though… Would I get more mortal sins?

My family watches me like a hawk and would be suspicious if I called someone. I wish I was an adult!

I’m worried that at confession I did not confess well enough, and that it is not valid in God’s eyes.

I went to confession Saturday, and I was extremely nervous, and ashamed. I had brought a list of my sins so I wouldn’t forget anything, and I used that. I did not omit any important mortal sins (I may have accidentally skipped a venial one), but while confessing the mortal sins I accidentally in the spur of the moment did not say some of the words regarding the specifics of the sin. I am so ashamed of the sin and was terrified about confessing it, but even though I am now out of confession I still do not feel clean. I did not intentionally omit details I think, but I was nervous and scared.

Do I have to confess again in more detail, or am I free to move on and learn? I have not committed these sins I had for a long time now, and I honestly do NOT intend to.
I have looked back over my 58 years on this Gods Earth and thought about various sins I’v committed, feeling bad is not a bad thing… but maybe what you should do is ask yourself, What made you do those things. really think about it… what made you do it… sometimes there is a deep valid reason, other times, you just got to admit to God you were just plain Stupid. trust me, I’v done a lot of stupid things for no real reason.
the hardest thing I have found… Is to forgive yourself.

I believe quite strongly that the confession was valid, for reasons which I will soon explain, however I am not sufficiently expert in the relevant theology to say with certainty. Hence my previous advice to call the priest, if possible.

You not being able to make a private phone call in your own home is a concern. Maybe now is the time to say “Mom, I need to make a private phone call”. I will go further, with a guess that your **perceived **lack of privacy may well be contributing to problems with impurity. Please think about making that call.

Now, as to my opinion of the confession.

First of all, it just stands out that you were doing your best. You are probably inexperienced with confession. IF, and it’s a big IF, you omitted important details, then to do so without knowing that they were important does not invalidate your confession. If you discover later that they were important, then you can confess them next time. You only invalidate your confession by **deliberately **omitting an important detail, that you **know **is an important at the time. Eg. if one honestly thinks that confessing “impurity” is all that is required and omits “fornication” then one has not invalidated the confession. The Church only asks us to confess to the best of our ability, and confession does take practice and maturity.

You omitted two details which were relevant - but were they essential? One, that you had read pornographic writing as well as looking at pictures and movies. In your post you said that you “forgot”. If you did really “forget” then there is no issue at all - just confess it next time. If it was more conscious than “forgetting”, then I would think that confessing an approximate number of times that you used pornography, which included the writing, then you are covered anyway. You omitted the least severe, rather than most severe, element. Whether the pornography was homosexual is perhaps the most problematic part of this. I myself have confessed this in the past (a long time ago), and certainly felt great shame. However, all pornography and masturbation involves a multitude of sins (adultery, fornication, self abuse, abuse of others, various fantasies, etc). Perhaps sometimes we **should **confess the details, but whether we are required to, and whether not confessing them invalidates the confession - I doubt it. (I would make an exception for some well known extremes which I won’t mention here). Again, you would only invalidate your confession if you reasonably thought, at the time, that this was essential, and deliberately omitted it.

But, please, consider just firmly asking to make a private phone call. Of course, if you suspect that your phone call will be listened to, then don’t do it - and then think about what other issues that might imply.

If any of my children asked to make a private phone call, I would certainly have accepted that. You may be underestimating your parents.

You will always have doubts if you don’t go back to confession.

I would tell your family that you are worried about not making a good enough confession. Tell them it is making you have sleepless nights and even though it is not life threatening you want to go back and make another confession. Obviously they don’t have to know the full facts.

Pray to Our Lord for guidance. If you really need to ask the question on here then you have already answered your question. Be at peace and have a happy soul and go and have another confession.

You will feel much better afterward. You are being told to go back by your inner soul.

God bless

Agreed. :yup:

Agreed. :yup:
I will try to get in contact with a priest then.

The reason I withheld it was partially fear, but that fear was because I wasn’t sure if the extra detail was needed and since it especially already disgusts me now I didn’t want to say it if I didn’t need to, so I withheld. It wasn’t something I decided to do rigjt away, I was so back and forth and I ended up not doing it.

I’m not in a state of mortal sin, am I? Do I need to confess to receiving communion in mortal sin since I confessed Saturday and went Sunday to mass?

I will eventually confess this for a piece of mind but I will be more rushed if this is a life threatening thing.
