Readings today in Mass and the Deacon’s sermon after - what the kingdom of heaven is like. I oft wonder - and it’s probably our human nature - that I have a really hard time imagining what Heaven is like. In his sermon, the deacon used the parable of the wedding banquet as an example. He said today, sure, we would all like a big banquet but it doesn’t have the same meaning as it did back then. The thought of a big nice banquest just doesn’t do it for most of us in modern times. So he challenged us to meditate and pray about it and try to imagine a time in our life when we felt so much joy that our response was to cry. He said try to imagine that as a glimpse of heaven. And honestly, that still doesn’t help me. I have a really hard time imagining what an eternity of love and being in the presence of God really means.

On the other hand, my imagination runs wild with all sorts of images of what hell is. Probably because of how a lot of us were raised and images in literature and the like.

Why is it so much easier to envision pain and suffering and misery than pure love?

I think I’ll just imagine Heaven as another planet somewhere in the universe, much like ours, but without all the pain, suffering and natural disasters. Where we are connected with God and see our true soul whole and complete with God.

Just in my NAAHO.

Everybody has a long transcript of hurt and suffering, there is no need to imagine it.

Conversely, love itself can turn into hurt and suffering, as people betray us, leave our lives, or die.

Me, I imagine Heaven as lying bodily in the embrace of our LORD’s arms, and basking in the light of His eyes; the rest wouldn’t matter as much!

Heaven is the fulfillment of every yearning on earth, including the ones that get us into trouble on earth.

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, oh Lord.” The restless heart that stirs us every moment on earth will finally be fully and perfectly satisfied in heaven.

I’m OK with that.
