Imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise

This is the part of the prayer I pray at the end of the rosary. I ponder the mysteries and what they contain. Is there an official list of what each mystery contains and promises? For example, the Annunciation = obedience, but what is it’s promise? I’ve searched the web, and there seem to be competing ideas on this.

The promise of the Annunciation might be that, by God’s Holy grace, we too can say yes to the will of God and that we can “give flesh” to the Word by being conformed more and more to Christ.

I think the promises are just ways in which the mysteries can be fulfilled in each Christian’s life. That can be very broad—like the Resurrection—or it can be very personal and very unique.

“What is the promise and the fulfillment of this mystery in my life?” sounds like a wonderful meditation.

I’m sorry this doesn’t address the “official list” part of your post. But I think that might be missing the point a bit, you know?

Since the Rosary is a private devotion, there is no “official” list. However, if you search you will find plenty of meditations for the mysteries and what they mean. Even your statement “Annunciation=Obedience” is not official, and the interpretation can vary, that is why there are competing ideas on this.

Find something that speaks to you and use it in your meditations.

I was taught:

The Second Glorious Mystery-Increase in Hope
The Third Glorious Mystery-Increase in Love
The Fourth Glorious Mystery-Increase Devotion to Mary
The Fifth Glorious Mystery-Increase in Grace

2nd -love of neighbor
3rd- detachment from the world
4th- respect for authority (obedience)
5th-Love of Jesus

Sorrowful
  1. Strength in times of temptation
  2. Spirit of purity
  3. moral courage
  4. patience in adversity
  5. Sorrow for sin
Luminous
All for joy

Peace

Ah, this is a very interesting question, and something that I have thought about quite often.

I usually think about it this way:

Each mystery contains many virtues and examples of how to live a life as a follower of God. For example, the Resurrection contains the virtue of hope (that we too may rise again), but also faith (truly believing that Jesus rose from the dead), and others.

The Visitation may contain a lesson on how we, like Mary, are called to bring Jesus to those in need (like giving the Eucharist to those who can’t attend Mass, or doing a work of mercy in another way). But it also teaches us that we should receive Jesus joyfully, like Elizabeth and John, and really appreciate Jesus’ willingness to be present on earth then, and now.

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

As for promises, I think that each mystery promises many things as well. It promises that God’s love for us is unconditional. Ultimately, I think if we can accomplish the teachings that come from each mystery… we obtain what is promised… Heaven.

This is a very broad question. How much should one write here, to answer you? There is no such official list. The “mysteries” of the Rosary are ways in which God is revealed, especially through Jesus Christ. At the end of each “mystery” we give thanks, in a way, by saying “Glory be …” We are glorifying God for revealing Himself through that “mystery.”

Dr Mary Healy recommends that we can make up our own rosary using the many incidents in the gospels and elsewhere in scripture that God being revealed or acting. The “promise” is the promise of eternal life and salvation. did you want something more than that?

Think of what we pray for in the Rosary, especially in the Lord’s Prayer. Those are the things we are praying for.

If you search “fruits of the mysteries of the rosary” you will find suggestions on this topic.
For example, the fruit of the second joyful mystery would be “love of neighbour” since our Blessed Mother visited her cousin out of charity.

that is pretty ngood

It’s rather reductionistic to create a one-to-one correspondence between any given mystery and a particular promise. It’s probably best to look at it altogether: prayer of the Rosary (not any particular mystery of it, but as a whole) promises us, through the prayers of Mary and the merits of Christ, grace in time and glory in eternity. To say anything beyond this is truly belabouring the point.
