In my Diocese, this past Saturday, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was abrogated. Why? Were the Bishop and the Priests too busy to celebrate Mass for our Blessed Mother? Has she become so insignificant that on the day set-aside just for her some Bishops chose to ignore her?
I shouldn’t be surprised. Fatima, the Rosary and the First Five Saturday Devotion are never mentioned in any homilies. The Blessed Mother is seen as an obstacle towards a so called “unity” with Protestants.
Pope Pius IX used Luke 1:28 “Hail, full of grace” as evidence to define the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
Beginning in 1970 the majority of Catholic Bibles removed this scripture from the Bible. Pope Paul VI called it an “ecumenical” translation, one that was made with the cooperation of our separated brethern. Compare the following translations

Douay-Rheims Luke 1:28 “Hail, full of grace the Lord is with thee”
New Catholic American Bible Luke 1: 28 “ Rejoice oh highly favored daughter”
King James Luke 1:28 “Hail thou that art highly favored”
As you can see the new Catholic bibles translate this scripture according to the King James Bible. This new translation will not make the Blessed Mother happy but it does fill the Protestants with joy.
I wonder if will we every reach a time when the Sunday obligation will also be abrogated?

Hmmm that is really sad… but anytime a Holy Day falls within seven days of a Sunday then you can just go on sunday… 😉 Sad but true huh…

please provide a link or site for the official statement from your bishop on this event, as in the US this cannot happen.

Interesting that they chose to remove the Hail Mary from the Bible. Interesting… but not at all surprising.

If they think that being a protestant is so great, why don’t they just leave the Church and become one and leave us in our Catholic ignorance? Life (and the Mass) would be so much better without them. Everyone will be happier then … we’ll have our Church back and they can wallow in their heretical bliss. I swear, the words “ecumenism” or “ecumenical” now trigger my gag reflex.

Nice one 😉 but yeah that is awful. I looked at next year’s calendar and I think that All Saints Day is going to be “abrogated” because it falls on a Saturday or Monday (forgot which).

still waiting for the official confirmation from OP’s bishop that this really happened.

I just located this:
Holy Days
Here are a list of Holy Days of Obligation in the United States:

"In addition to Sunday, the days to be observed as Holy Days of Obligation in the Latin Rite dioceses of the United States of America, in conformity with Canon 1246, are as follows:

January 1 - The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
August 15 - The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
November 1 - The Solemnity of All Saints
December 8 - The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
December 25 - The Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Whenever January 1, The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or November 1, The Solemnity of All Saints, or December 8, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated." - (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) stlaurenceparish.com/custom_page.cfm?category=2&page=50

yeah that is weak… God forbid we go to church 2 days in a row! Course not like anyone goes to Holy Day masses anyway, they probably do it to keep anyone from gettin a mortal sin… ! 😃 Overall, though its pretty pathetic.

Sorry but I can not give you a link to the official website of my diocese. Trust me it was abrogated.
I have, in the past, posted e-mails from my FSSP priest regarding his refusal to give communion in the hand at the Traditional Mass and his refusal to say the Novus Ordo. There are some who have posted that my priest has no right to do that. I am quite sure that they would love to report my FSSP priest to the BIshop. Therefore I cannot let you know what diocese I am in.

If you ask me, I think we need some more Old School teaching around here.

The Immaculate Conception is celebrated as the patronal feast of the United States and as such the obligation to attend Mass on Dec. 8 is not abrograted. I am trying to find this on the USCCB site but I am having problems with the connection. I believe it is in the BCL Newsletter.

stmaria,

I provided evidence that it had been abrogated above; or at least a bulletin that said it was abrogated.

I’m not sure about the rest of our diocese, but our parish had the vigil Mass on Friday night. I can understand why, with the advent of the Saturday vigil Mass, that there could be confusion and people trying to do “two fers” with the Saturday Mass, but I don’t personally see any problem with having Mass on back to back days. But then I don’t go out of “obligation” either so maybe my perspective might be distorted. Of course it could also have something to do with the lack of priests in many areas and trying to keep from stretching them too thin?

I was under the impression that both of those items would fall under the special permission the FSSP was given to only say the TLM and in traditional form.

So in order to protect a priest you are willing to accuse a Bishop without offering proof.

While I do not doubt your honesty, I feel that I should question your ethical standards.

You are doubting my honesty and yes I will protect my priest. I am not accusing the Bishop of anything. I am simply telling you that he abrogated the feast.

Why are you saying that I doubt your honesty? I do not have evidence that the Bishop did or did not abrogate the precept. I did take your word for it.

If I questioned your honesty then I would not have looked at your ethical standards. I do not even question your ethic but some of the standards on which you base it.

You said “Has she become so insignificant that on the day set-aside just for her some Bishops chose to ignore her?” That to me is accusing the Bishop of wrong doing!
