You’re correct. This year December 8 is on a Sunday and the obligation to attend Mass is on Sunday. Even though the celebration of the Immaculate Conception will transfer to Monday the obligation to attend Mass will not transfer.
SuscipeMeDomine:
Thank you and a couple others for clarifying this information. It didn’t seem like it was explained well last week in my parish bulletin, but it was there.
At today’s Mass that I attended, the pastor made an announcement about it. The pastor emphasized that although tomorrow is not a holy day of obligation, he will be presiding over an extra Mass at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. I’m glad this pastor mentioned this, because this particular parish only offers one daily Mass in the morning when I am already at work.
Suggestion: Check parishes in your area for a daily Mass that will work around your work schedules. Some parishes in downtown areas regularly offer a Mass around lunchtime, and since it is the Immaculate Conception, that’s what the Mass will be about.
If you can’t make it at lunchtime, here’s some other suggestions:
- Check parishes to see if there is a daily Mass where you can get up a little earlier, beat the traffic, and attend a 6:30 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. Mass on your way to work.
- Another alternative is to see if there is a parish that offers an early evening daily Mass. The parish I regularly attend does a 5:30 p.m. daily Mass, which is well attended by Catholics who are on their way home from work. Another parish close to downtown regularly schedules a 6:15 p.m. daily Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Personally, I did these two suggestions one year when the Feast of the Assumption was abrogated because it fell on a Monday, but I still wanted to make sure that I attended Mass. I found a parish that was a half hour drive, but the parish regularly schedules a 6:30 p.m. daily Mass on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
I have also been allowed to take an hour of vacation time on a Holy Days of Obligation so I could attend Mass before going to work. Just tell your boss that you want to take an hour of vacation for personal business - he or she will understand.
Hope this helps a little.
