I believe the woman in this verse is the bride of Christ or the church herself. She is wearing a crown of 12 stars symbolizing that she is governed by the 12 apostles with the authority of the Priesthood.Well, I think we do have strong legs to stand on, but that is because we Catholics accept the teaching authority of the Church, and hold that Tradition as well as Holy Scriptures contain divine revelation. Once you accept that, you don’t necessarily have to see something “explicitly” in the Scriptures to believe it, although I believe that all Catholic teaching is there, either implicitly or explicitly.
I think it is important to note the Catholics hold that public revelation ended when St. John composed the last sentence in the book of Revelation. Therefore, there are no “new” doctrines that the Church can add; rather, there is just a development of a truth that was already there.
Speaking of the book of Revelation, there is a beautiful image contained therein that is usually read on Marian feast days, about seeing a woman clothed with the sun, Chapter 12. It is obviously a reference to the Virgin Mary, and I think that one can logically infer from this passage, as well as the passage in John’s Gospel, where the Lord places her in St. John’s hands, that she continues to have a relationship with the Church, acting as our spiritual mother.
Scott
1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
