I’m quite taken by St Maximilian Kolbes Mariology, he says that the Eternal Immaculate Conception is the Holy Spirit and the “incarnation” of the Holy Spirit is the Immaculate Conception: Mary, and the Holy Spirit does not operate without Mary: Mediatrix of all graces.

Of course the Holy Spirit is not incarnate, but would it be ok too view Mary as the Holy Spirit “incarnate”?

Dear Zorrox,

There is already a very intensive thread on this. Probably on this Apologetics Forum.

The technical term being used is the quasi-incarnation of the Spirit. So if you do a search for quasi-incarnation it should locate the thread.

In my theological opinion, the claim that the Holy Spirit can do nothing without Mary is an heretical claim, exalting Mary above God. Mary is Mediatrix, properly understood. But the Holy Spirit can and does act apart from her. For example, Mary is not mediatrix of the graces that flow from Christ’s divine nature to his human nature, nor is she the mediatrix of the graces that she herself receives from Christ through the Holy Spirit.

In my theological opinion, the claim that Mary is the Holy Spirit incarnate is also heretical. Mary and the Holy Spirit are two separate persons. Their unique close cooperation does not merit the term incarnate, because that term applies to one Divine person who also takes on a human nature: two natures but one person.

This kind of mariology which exalts Mary without limits eventually leads to numerous departures from the true Catholic faith. Mary is finite, so our theology about Mary must always acknowledge that finiteness.

St Maximilian Kolbe is not a heretic, and what I write is his theses, of course they would have to be understood in a Catholic manner. he doesn’t say that the Holy Spirit is incarnated in Mary as was shown by the citation marks. Mediatrix omnium gratiarum does of course mean what recent popes have meant by that title not anything else as you also remark. That God chooses to operate only through Mary on us cannot be heretical since it has been held by several popes and saints. Of course God can work on us directly but that’s not the point.
In this view all graces flow from the Trinity through the sacred humanity of Christ, through the Virgin to us.
I repeat this view is held by several popes and doctors of the Church and several Saints.

Peace and all good.
