Anybody like the new Los Angeles Immaculate Heart Radio?

I find its programming and shows to be a big disappointment.

For instance, Patrick Madrid has been given a morning show where he just covers interesting news much the same as the secular counterparts (McIntyre in the Morning KABC, Handel KFI) except Madrid is not particularly good or interesting and their is very little to none Catholicism injected. The show is all about what he deems interesting news pulled from the headlines. Whats more is Madrids show is rebroadcast again during prime hours. So you get 3 hours in the morning and another 3 hours from noon-3pm. Yuck, thats worse than the secular counterparts as they dont rebroadcast their shows later in the day.
Patrick Madrid isn’t the only person over there to be given a show. There are other talky shows over there where the host is Catholic but talks psychology or finance or something else and you have to listen closely to pick up on the fact that it might be a Catholic show.

I used to like KCEO San Diego am 1000, which is an Immaculate Heart Radio station.
But it seems the insipid talk show talkers from the LA station who talk and are Catholic but dont really fill the show with Catholicism, well that programming seems to be migrating over to KCEO.

I’m in Huntington Beach, Orange County so I get KHJ strong day and night, but only KCEO strong during the day, but it washes out / dissapears at night as I am too far away for their nighttime signal.
 
I am really enjoying it!

And I liked Patrick Madrid’s morning show.

I’m not sure what you mean, it was all about the news and a Catholic perspective. Shows like that will probably open up the Catholic Faith to a broader audience.

No one wants to listen to 24 hours of strict apologetics I don’t think…at least I don’t and I am a die hard Catholic Answers Fan.
 
Well we can agree to disagree.

I come from the perspective of listening to Catholic Radio for the last 15 years mostly on the internet.

Ave Maria Radio: Michigan (Al Kresta being tops)
Relevant Radio (Drew Mariani Show & Morning Air : being very good)
and Immaculate Heart Radio(Son Rise Morning Show: okay or better).

I find what Patrick Madrid is doing with a morning show to be a very substandard offering.
Although prior to this Patrick Madrid has been an excellent broadcaster w/ prior shows.
Time will tell, but I dont expect the Patrick Madrid Show to exist very long in its present format.

was pretty much satisfied by KCEO IHR San Diego, until the programming changes coinciding with IHR LA KHJ 930 coming online.
 
I’m already familiar with Immaculate Heart Radio from the internet, so I know what to expect. I listen occasionally. I grew up listening to Boss Radio 93 KHJ playing the hits of the 1960s, so it will be interesting listening to it again as a Catholic channel.

I have not heard the show yet but I don’t think I could take three hours of that myself. I really like EWTN Nightly News on TV it’s a half hour show and could probably get away with going to an hour.
 
Update:

Patrick Madrid’s morning show has improved from his first week.
It is now decent. He still covers fresh news, but now slows it down and interjects quite a bit of Catholicism into it. Patrick Madrid is very talented and interesting.

What you dont get from a Pastors Church Homily, which is practically nothing beyond baby food at all times in all parishes, you can get from Catholic Radio.

On the other hand, Madrids show gets repeated many times throughout the 24 hour day, maybe it should be called “Madrid Radio”. Unbelievably, KHJ (Immac. Heart Radio) has a long ways to go towards filling out their radio schedule. Immaculate Heart Radio has over 20 radio stations, but is diddling on the programming schedule for KHJ.

As an example, The Joe Kimmora Show and the Phil Sandoval Show are still not good offerings, very little Catholicism, alot of psychology or pep talk. Morevoer these shows are also repeated in the 24 hour cycle. Not a whole lot of reason, to keep this station on over a 8 hour or more period with all the repeated programming and boring hosts.
 
Interesting. I remember KHJ in the 1970’s. I hope the new KHJ 930 can appeal to a younger audience as well. Frank discussions from young adults/teens on Catholic issues. I’ll be tuning in. I hope I won’t be disappointed.
 
I agree with beeline’s comment. After several years of no Catholic programming in Los Angeles, we finally get it back, and it’s terrible…

The new format in Los Angeles is a major dissapointment. Repeating morning drive shows during the evening drive-time is a bad decision. Also, for some reason, they think we want to listen to music! Lately (over the course of a couple of days now) I’ve tuned in and found they’re playing songs. If I wanted songs, I’d be on the FM dial.

I don’t mean to sound uncharitable, but the cold hard fact is that if they don’t attract Catholic listeners, they won’t be on the air very long. Los Angeles is home to literally millions of Catholics, so they have no excuse for not figuring this out.

Also, Patrick Madrid can be good when it comes to apologetics, but he is bigtime boring when he pontificates on the news of the day! The other day he went on and on about Mormon beliefs on abortion… I mean, give me a break.

I hope they figure this out fast!
 
The music is pathetic. I guess the hosts have Christmas season off. So where’s the canned shows and programs from EWTN and other sources like St. Joseph Radio. The other Immac. Heart Radio stations use them.

KHJ(am 930) started up in Nov 2014, and in December they ran a fund-athon which supposedly fell short for Los Angeles–dont know the metrics on that. Start a religious radio station in November, fundraising falls short in December,…sounds about right. Except there is not enough Catholicism on KHJ, it tries to somewhat mimic the other Los Angeles AM band talk shows to some extent and ends up not being like other Catholic radio stations which are all pretty good, except for this one.

I received a response with a link to ewtn.com at the top of a canned letter explaining the new format will attract more listners. I guess, as is par for my life course, I am not in the majority.

Patrick Madrids morning show has been all reruns for the past 8 business days(~2weeks).
so OldMetalHead do you think they are going to slide in a new format?

Your observation that IHR is mimicking talk radio is right on, IHR used to have quite a bit of EWTN shows/programming. I’d prefer that.

I dont want Catholic guys talking, I want Catholic talk!

I also dont like the ‘counselor/therapy’ guy.
 
While I’m grateful to have Catholic radio here in LA, The schedule seems way too sparse. As everyone else has been mentioning, it’s really the same three shows over and over again (actually four, since they added the retooled “Right Here Right Now” into the mix) with CAL in its live hours. Sundays are dismal – as much as I like the Immaculat Heart Music, I wish they had some form of actual Sunday programming, like on the other IHR stations. Was KHJ not able to get content from the EWTN network or something? :confused:
