How can one as a Catholic deal with an immediate family member who is verbally abusive, nasty and mean spirited?

I need to deal with this person for the sake of another but am getting very tired of being subjected to insults (re: weight, jobs, clothing, etc) childish behavior and temper tantrums.

Being in this person’s “space” is draining and upsetting every time.

He is old and will not change

thank you

If he will not change, here are some options:
  1. Be nice to him. It’ll confuse him, and eventually he will be so confused he might just give up.
  2. Ignore him. Know that all that really matters is how you view yourself and how the Lord views you. ( I know this is easier said than done, but if you can get there-IT WORKS)
  3. Fight fire with fire-make fun of him. Like all bullies, when confronted, he’ll probably just run away.
No matter what-know who you are.

All I can add is pray before every time you need to be with him. It will help you so much. Prayer can protect us.

Thank you all! I have heard from others too to try the ignore method (I am sure it is easier say than done that’s for sure! 😉 )and I think that is the best bet for me - and I WILL pray everytime i need to be around him

I need to deal with him for the sake of others I love so this advice is very helpful thank you
