Immigrants storm Spanish enclave
About 100 people managed to break through into Spanish territory, where they are being questioned. Melilla and nearby Ceuta are seen as stepping stones to Europe by African immigrants…

Three immigrants have died since August trying to enter Melilla… Many migrants… drown while attempting to make the sea crossing to Spain - either across the Mediterranean Sea or to the Canary Islands, over the Atlantic Ocean.

In the past week, the Moroccan authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people planning to travel illegally to Europe. Some 300 were Moroccan, the others from sub-Saharan Africa.

it´s a disaster, but how, we can´t have mines, concrete walls and weapons, and the police don´t have weapons.
Spain is a disaster, the left has destroyed my country.

Under Spanish rule since 15th Century;
claimed by Morocco
Population: Ceuta - 74,654;
Melilla - 68,016 (2004)
Combined area: 32 sq km (12 sq miles)
Surrounded by border fences
Linked to Spain by air and ferry services
Officials in Ceuta said the migrants were crushed to death as hundreds tried to cross the border fence from Morocco. Spanish officials have denied reports that police opened fire on the crowd.

Seeking Europe’s 'promised land’

Moussa saw no future in his impoverished
homeland
“They say that to die once is better than dying 10 times in the face of your parents’ pity,” says Khalil Jemmah, from the AFVIC group set up to defend the immigrants’ rights in Morocco.

Mali is one of the world’s poorest countries and Moussa felt he had no future there. He dreamt of being able to find a job where he could earn enough to support his family and maybe buy a few luxuries, like a television or even a car. And he thought he could only do this in Europe - or “Eldorado” as he and the other “comrades” call it…

For those with money for the Moroccan people smugglers, there was a menu of alternative ways to reach Spain: 800 euros for getting around the border to Ceuta in an inflatable raft, 600 euros for digging a tunnel or 500 euros for cutting a hole in the fences…

After enduring extreme hardship and the ever-present possibility that each day would be their last as they crossed the Sahara desert to reach Morocco, many of those who attack the fences are no longer afraid of dying.

Cant these people find a “legal” way to go to these countries??

African migrants 'left in desert’
A Medecins Sans Frontieres spokeswoman said that while some of the 500 found in the desert had been detained before they managed to cross the Ceuta and Melilla fences, others had been illegally expelled by Spanish police.

MSF said the sub-Saharan migrants had been “abandoned to their fate” near El Aouina-Souatar, hundreds of kilometres south of the enclaves. The group included pregnant women and children…

Javier Gabaldon, MSF co-ordinator in Morocco, denounced the “expulsion and later abandonment of these immigrants to a zone without access to food and water and without the possibility of receiving medical or humanitarian aid”.

MSF said “the sending back of immigrants as agreed by Spain and Morocco to a country which does not have minimal capacity to receive them violates Article Three of the (UN) Convention against Torture”.

Franze:
With that the “narrow ally” of US, Morocco is pressuring Spain, or allowing the entrance of immigrants or I let dying. Morocco, this muslim country that torture moroccan citizens, saharuis, and invades spanish lands. A “marvellous country”
It is unfortunate that many governments (USA included) will not take a stand on this sort ot thing. I am for immigration and against illegal-immigration. But, those countries that allow immigration must set standards for those they let ino their borders.
