John of Woking:
according to the Catechism. Has anyone confessed this sin? Did Jesus laugh?

The NT doesn’t tell us.

I think that this is the sort of thing that depends very much on culture, and nurture. Solemnity and gravity of manner were thought of as ideals in late antiquity, IIRC. The Stoics were not fond of merriment, but of freedom from the passions - and this may have leaked into Christianity, as the two movements had a fair amount in common.

John, you enjoy mocking Catholicism, don’t you?
I am not mocking Catholicism :banghead: . I am a practising :yup: Catholic who sincerely wants peoples opinion on this matter.

Somehow, I doubt that, but far be it from me to question your motives.

Jesus loved us so immoderately that He lived and died for us. Was that a sin?

Why do you doubt it? I am offended by your calumnious exhortions. I can ask questions or can’t I?:hmmm:

see, I keep telling you guys the humor police are patrolling these forums but you won’t believe me. may we see the citation please in CCC
Yes Annie, you and I have to watch our every step, don’t we? Your ability to look on the lighter side of the finer points of Catholic hairsplitting on matters of doctrinal and postural purity, and solemn reverance performed in military fashion, not to mention the proper placement of the choir in accordance to the standards set forth by the liturgical gestapo (and did I mention the utmost tolerance for offkey singing which will earn one indulgences?)…

Ya better watch your step girl!

For the record, the citation is:

**"****1856 **. But when the sinner’s will is set upon something that of its nature involves a disorder, but is not opposed to the love of God and neighbor, such as thoughtless chatter or immoderate laughter and the like, such sins are venial." (.
idle chatter is a sin? does that include internet chatter? whooops are we in trouble
