I was reading an examination of conscience today that asked if you had looked at another or yourself immodestly. Huh?

I’m not fully understanding the question, but I am interested in you fleshing it out further?

Two things came to mind…by dressing immodestly, you do have to check a mirror…

And also looking at yourself and committing the sin of masturbation.

Did I willfully look at an indecent picture or cast an immodest look upon myself or another? Did I willfully desire to commit such a sin?
I understand this except for “upon myself”.

I cannot for the life of me remember exactly where I found this information, but I was recently reading a book or article on Christian morality that discussed this very thing. Apparently it is possibly to look at oneself with lust, and this happens especially with young people who have homosexual temptations.

There’s no problem with looking at your own nude body, but to lust after one’s own image would be a kind of self-abuse. I think maybe this is what your EoC is referring to.

The sin of lust is all about the objectification of others, and yourself. Before I recovered from my addiction to lust, I would sin by looking objectively at my sexual organs. I didn’t have homosexual desires or temptations, but this is where this sin may have taken me had I not gotten help. Those looking at porn specifically dwell on the sexual organs, it is not about beauty, it is about raw lust. Once on the path to objectification the devil is able to open all sorts of new pathways to him and away from Christ.

The most powerful weapon the devil has is fear. He wants you to be ashamed of what you’ve done so that you never seek forgiveness. He wants you to get to the point of despair, and in the end lose your soul to him.

Thank you for that brave and honest clarification, Anton. God bless you!

It is entirely possible to look at yourself immodestly - eg assessing yourself in terms of sexual attractiveness to others or some such. Not necessarily to do with homosexuality particularly.

Of course we all do and all need to occasionally examine our bodies, to make sure they’re healthy and so on, but it is possible to objectify even our own bodies.

Maybe it is a weakness and sinful, but I think we all (especially in our younger years, but I believe throughout our lives) attempt look at our own bodies as we believe others see them. We do this because we believe the more attractive we are the more potential we have in attracting others. We desire to be attractive because we fear being alone.

This may be sinful but I doubt it is mortal sin in that if it is a sin, it is a sin of our human weakness. It’s a rare person indeed who truly does not care what he/she looks like to others.
