I am new to the forum and was trying to get some ideas about how to respond to my friend who called me and told me that her daughter requested to use their summer home for a weekend with a new “boyfriend.” She (the daughter) is still married and has 2 children at home. She is unhappy and seeking a divorce. I was so shocked by my friend saying that they invited the daughter and her “friend” over to meet them before giving them the keys to their summer home, I am trying to figure out how to best respond to this disappointing and immoral situation. I was so shocked by my friend’s attitude that I am feeling alienated and “judgmental.” Thank you for any help and insights you can share.

She shared her “great” news with you. Now share the “Good News” with her. You don’t need to preach but you can mention that you see things differently and that type of behavior is unacceptable according to your values. If she becomes offended ask her what she would tell you if you said that you might commit suicide. Would she stand back and watch?

Remember that you can only do so much but I feel that you should say something. Jesus would…teachccd 🙂

Good friends do not allow their friends to "crash and burn"without saying anything. Share your thoughts by telling her how you would have reacted to the situation, but do not condemn her or point fingers. It may help her to react differently next time. People do lots of crazy things in the name of “love.” They understand that love is a feeling and particularly a feeling that must be acted upon.

I would say something but do it in kindness and gentleness.

Why is she getting a divorce? Was the guy a jerk? Did he abuse her? If there is a valid reason for divorce then why is she going after another man when she should be raising her kids is what I’d like to know? But I agree, do not be harsh. Have her(the mother) talk to Dr. Laura

I would say something. Even if her husband is abusive, etc, she should not be focused now on a new ‘boyfriend’ or going away for the weekend and leaving her children. If she’s just ‘unhappy’ because she’s out chasing new men, then even more reason to say something. Your friend’s grandchildren will be scarred by their parents behavior. Say something in love and friendship, but stick up for those kids!

Is your friend (the mom who owns the summer home) a Christian?

I would definitely say something.
The question is how to say it tactfully, lovingly, and in a non-judgmental tone… that’s a VERY TOUGH thing to do.

No advice on what to say… many prayers will be needed.

Definately say something, but very carefully and gently. Almost test the waters first by casually bringing the subject up. Good luck.
