I work at my local public library. Seems harmless enough. But lately I’m not sure. It is sad that a large portion of our materials range from questionable to completely immoral. We have selections of many soft and hard porn in our fiction and romance sections. In both fiction and non fiction we have selections that range from disrespectful to out and out satanic ideas and beliefs. Pro-choice, pornography, santanic, every way to loose your soul it’s there. Our children and teenage sections sadly aren’t exempt from these books and DVDs. In fact they have full access to the adult materials as well. I love to read and love working with books and helping the community, but lately I’m not sure if I should even continue working here because of my christian beliefs and morals. Am I comitting a sin by coninuing to work here? What should I do?

We are able to do online searches from home of the contents of our public library.

I’ve noticed that our public library continues to fill the shelves with New Age spiritualism while the newest Catholic book is 7 years old.

It’s extremely hard to work in the world and not encounter some form of objectionable or immoral material, whether it is written, spoken, or seen in the actions of your co-workers. Unless you are solely responsible for what material is put on those shelves, I don’t see how you could be committing a sin.

Libraries and bookstores carry what is in demand. It’s unfortunate so many things have a negative connotation…porn, graphic violence, new-agey stuff…but you are a service provider.

Yes, teens have acess to such materials, but most librarians usually have the common sense to steer them away least an angry parent appear.

The guy who installs the comcast cable is not morally responsible for what is viewed. Sometimes it really just comes down to living in this world while praying for the next.

It is not a sin to work at the public library, however, if you are uncomfortable there, you should seek employment elsewhere. The parents are responsible for what their children check out and read at the library and adults are responsible for their own actions.

Am I committing a sin by continuing to work here?

I wouldn’t think so but if it does bother you it would be a good idea to consult with your priest over this. Do otherwise good people sin if they work in an abortion mill? My point is why take a chance with your immortal soul?

I will only offer this as a possibility, but certainly not a “final” opinion. Maybe God has put you into this situation so that you can help to rectify it. You may be there in order that he may work through you.

Again, I say that only as a possibility. I have thought at times I was in a situation because I was supposed to change it only to find that I gave into temptation. It became clear after the fact that I should not have been in the situation. So, again, I offer this only as a thought to ponder. I would pray about it though and God may help you to discern the situation.

I hope this may help a bit.

I wouldn’t think so either. I can’t see how it would be a sin to work at a public library. Just be sure that it doesn’t somehow affect your sprituality or become a temptation for you somehow.

Sometimes we don’t do things, not because it is immoral, but because it hinders our union with Jesus in some way.
