Immorality on tv?

ok, thank you.

this wasn’t really an issue until yesterday whe I got that quote about pornography thrown at me, and claiming it applied to any and all forms of sexuality in any movie. saying that one sex scene in a movie was somehow porn

and to be honest, disturbing content is far less disturbing when you can’t even see what’s going on.

for example, I really have no clue if there’s an actual sex scene or a covered up one in a movie. I can usually deduce the implication but even then sometimes not, if there is loud music blaring while it’s happening. many times, I find out after the fact, if someone tells me or if I read part of the plot online later

or the full extent of bloody violence and thelike usually just goes over my head
yes, I know your visual impairment also factors in to your personal assessment of TV and movies.

Realize that on a public forum you are going to get all kinds of answers, including those that skew away from Church teaching and into the bizarre. That is a primary reason we keep encouraging you to get a regular spiritual director who knows you and can combat all the “i read it on the internet” stuff.

I also asked a priest about this.

he confirmed what most of you said, that would be a ridiculous assessment of the catechism quote. I think my own previous assessment of the situation is fine, which you agreed with.

the scruples are improving

I am certainly happy to find you do have access to an actual priest, and that your scruples are improving.

I am delighted to know that your scruples are improving. I assure you of my prayers.

If you’re talking about lust being caused by images, then yes.
If you mean just a character doing something evil, for example, say, forging, I can’t see how just looking at it could be a sin for you.
What if watching it makes we want to go out and forge?

Does anyone else here think its highly strange (especially the times we live in), majority of people seem to totally fine with a govt agency (FCC) deciding what is moral and immoral when it comes to censoring network and cable tv?

Seems to me, people would have called for this to end long ago, I mean, why should some govt agency be determining what words and scenes can be aired on tv, sounds kind of medieval actually ?!

Not to mention, why a govt entity would even be in the business of determining what is moral and immoral when it comes to television/movies!

It is interesting to see how people in the U.S. are still so much more prude (or at least pretend to be) than people in Europe.
Especially considering that a large percentage of the questionable stuff/culture actually comes from Hollywood.
I was always wondering how to reconcile those two observations.
This whole violence/sexuality thing in movies (or general media) is MUCH less on the agenda here in Europe.
(Well, there must be a reason why Eastern Germans “invented” naturism 😃 )
Nobody seems to really care at all. I think this is due to the relative weakness of fundamentalist protestantism here -
it is almost not existant.
