In Hebrew, soul and spirit have different understandings. In English they are basically the same. Soul or “nephesh” means life or creature. Spirit or “rauh” means breath or essence of life. “The Lord God fashioned man out of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life and thus man became a living being» (Gn 2, 7). Therefore: body + spirit = soul. So, when a body dies, the soul DOES die because the “mathematical equation”, if you will, is no longer valid. At death, the spirit goes to God because Jesus demonstrated this when He said " into thy hands I commend my spirit”, NOT soul. Therefore, our spirit is with God til resurrection day and on that day,we become soul again. That is, body and spirit.
