As I restated above to Gary, we are a soul we do not recieve a soul. A soul is comprised of two parts. A body and the animating spirit of God, breath. Without either one of the parts the soul ceases to exist. It’s like a wooden box made from boards and nails. If you assemble the boards in just the right way and fasten them with nails you have a box. If you pull the nails out of the boards and put them and the boards in a pile do you have a box any more? No of coarse not. Where did the box go, to heaven? No, the box ceases to exist. It’s the same principle with a soul.

Spiritual death doesn’t mean the soul ceases from existence. It just means the soul is separated permanently from God. That is why when we are baptized we are born again. It is believed because of Original Sin, we are born spiritually dead, or separated from God. And through baptism we are born again. Of course some protestant denominations took this and ran with it.

In Hebrew, soul and spirit have different understandings. In English they are basically the same. Soul or “nephesh” means life or creature. Spirit or “rauh” means breath or essence of life. “The Lord God fashioned man out of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life and thus man became a living being» (Gn 2, 7). Therefore: body + spirit = soul. So, when a body dies,the soul DOES die because the “mathematical equation”, if you will, is no longer valid. At death, the spirit goes to God because Jesus demonstrated this when He said " into thy hands I commend my spirit”, NOT soul. Therefore, our spirit is with God til resurrection day and on that day,we become soul again.That is, body and spirit.
