If you have imperfect contrition, can you still be forgiven in confession even if you committed a mortal sin? I struggle with these feelings…unfortunately, I think I fear punishment more than anything else. Although, I do feel really bad and want to get to a state of perfect contrition.

However, if you are in a state of imperfect contrition, can you still be forgiven of mortal sins? Thank you and God bless. My OCD is getting to me again. lol

Sacramental confession is efficacious so long as you sincerely regret your sins and intend not to repeat them. Perfect contrition is required for “extra-sacramental” remission of sins. At least I believe this to be the case.

So in other words you are fine, although we should all endeavor for such love as to be able to have perfect contrition for our sins of course.

Glad you went to confession!

Yes, they are forgiven. My understanding is that in theory, perfect contrition only exists if you actually completely repent and have no attachment to your sins at all. If you had perfect contrition, you’d never commit that sin again as your heart would be completely converted. Confession though helps us in the process of converting our hearts. It is a slow turning toward Christ, not a instantenously one. Theoretically a person with perfect contrition would not need confession. The reality is though that our hearts are not perfectly contrite for any of our sins. As such, acknowledging and recognizing our sins is a small step in our conversion. Going to confession is taking a far larger step in the road of conversion.
