Imperfect Media

I posted a similar topic before…
From what I have gathered, it is not necessarily sinful to watch certain media with moral faults (violence, sexual jokes, etc). Some of the shows I stream online (legally) have both morally redeeming qualities and some of the faults that I mentioned before.

However, by watching such shows or films, am I giving distributors or networks the idea that the audience supports whatever they put onscreen? If so, is there any way to avoid this whithout abandoning shows I enjoy?

Just because a show has sexuality or violence in it does not mean it is necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes that can be used to enhance the film (properly done). We’re adults and we are able to discuss and watch adult things. Now, that being said, I would steer clear of things that use gratuitous sex and violence.

For example, my priest (who holds a PhD in Canon Law) has no issues watching Rome and The Tudors…

What we teach our children is meant to carry into their adult lives. Not even the porn industry calls what they do porn. The call it “adult entertainment.”

I can think of no legitimate reason to show a lot of skin in a movie much less suggestive activity. Human sexuality is meant to be private and exclusive. To use it as “entertainment” degrades the human person.

Movies and TV shows don’t make themselves, and what was an R a decade ago is now PG-13. Writers and producers are sensitive to viewer reactions. If enough people complain, something happens. Some years back, a commercial featuring singer Madonna was pulled after viewers complained. The thing to remember is that they can’t sell it if people say they don’t want it. And there are regular meetings where executives and writers discuss the “public’s mood” about certain topics. If no one complains, they could be left with the impression that the public thinks it’s OK (whatever it may be).
