Hello all, I would be grateful for some clarification on the following verse from scripture:

John 6:
54 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.

What does it mean to “not have life in you”? Does it mean that without receiving Holy Communion, we cannot have grace in our souls? Does it mean that without Communion, our souls
are effectively dead?

If this is the case, aren’t the implication for protestants rather serious?

God bless,
Noel.

Your Spiritual Life is dead without Holy Communion to feed it.

Hello Br. Rich, thanks for the reply. Would you mind elaborating on this point please? How would you define “Spiritual Life”?

God bless,
Noel.

Hi nkelly,

Jesus’ words are clear. He is of course talking of our spiritual life. That is why the Church prescribes that we should receive communion at least once a year at Easter time.

If you don’t feed your body, it eventually dies. If you don’t feed your soul, it eventually “dies”, meaning that it drifts away from God.

I think it depends on knowledge. Most Protestants have never been taught that the Eucharist is Jesus’ Real Body and Blood and most Protestants have never been taught that they MUST eat Jesus’ Flesh, they have entirely view of John 6.

I believe if someone knows the truth of the Eucharist and rejects it, they are in a very real way rejecting Christ.
