Importance of Baptism

I would just like to know on what people think of Baptism i have read it in many bible readings. But i would like to know what Baptism means to people and its importance to them

Baptism washes away the sin that we inherited from Adam as well as any sins that he have committed prior to being Baptized. It gives us a clean slate before God. But after we have been baptized, as for those sins that we commit afterwards we need to deal with through Penance and Confession.

Without baptism there are no Christians and therefore no Christianity. St.Paul says that, in baptism, the old man in us, who has lost his original innocence, is buried and we resurrect to a new life in Christ. We are marked as belonging to Him in a way that can never be erased. From then on, our every action, done in His spirit, is as if if were done by Him. Our good actions, united to Him, become meritorious and contribute as well to the salvation of the world.

Baptism is the spiritual aspect of our bodily resurrection :

For, if by a death similar to Christ’s [our “death” in baptism] we have become one with Christ, we shall also be one with Him in a similar resurrection.

Baptism does not wash away sin. Your sins are washed away by the blood that Christ shed for us. Baptism is a symbol of us dying to our old self and coming up new through Christ. I would be more than happy to share some scripture with you.

“Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John iii, 5)

“Peter said to them: Do penance, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins …” (Acts ii, 38)

“Baptism being of the like form [with the water by which Noah was saved], now saveth you also: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the examination of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ …” (I Peter iii, 21)

This is how important John’s Baptism was for having ears to hear Jesus . This is the reasoning given in the Gospel of Luke for the crowd’s reaction after Jesus spoke.

Luke Chapter 7 verse 29

And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John’s baptism. 30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him.

If this is the kind of importance given to John’s aptism into a pattern of righteousness, a righteousness required to be able to accept Jesus’ testimony, imagine how important a baptism into a pattern of perfect life is for becoming perfect.

Baptism is an instrument used to wash away our sins but it does get its power from the Blood of Christ. The water as of itself has no power.
