I have a problem: I think I’m in Mortal sin, but I’m not sure. Basically, I got in a fight with my brother today. In short, I was supposed to wash the dishes, and so I said I would be over soon, and he said, “Get over here, you spoiled brat.” So I got mad and, although I don’t remember the details, I said something that ended with “you spoiled brat”. I didn’t mean that, I said it to prove a point that it was hurtful to me that he’d said that. However, I do remember thinking that I should’ve have done it. I’m scrupulous, just so you know.

In my heart, I’m pretty sure this is a venial sin, but I’m not sure. I probably won’t be able to make it to confession tomorrow so I really need to know.

If you’re unsure, confess it anyway. There’s no need for continuous threads by anybody. There are conditions for mortal sin that we have to meet. Keeping in mind too that we must act in accordance with our well formed conscience. If you are unsure, just tell your confessor as much and confess it anyway.

Thanks for your response, but I talked to somebody and he said he didn’t think it was so serious. The reason I had to ask is because I most likely won’t be able to go to confession tomorrow and I wanted to know if I should receive the Eucharist. Thanks again for the post.

if you have a tendency towards scrupulosity, you need to find a really good confessor and discuss it with him so he can help you out.

St Francis de Sales has excellent advice about humility and other sioritual issues in his Introduction to the Devout Life, which you can find in its entirely online, and maybe at your library (maybe through interlibrary loan).

Rely on God for all your faults, when you fall, just pick yourself back up and rely on God again.

While I agree with the others about talking to your confessor, I would like to point out something that might give you peace on this matter until then.

You open by saying you “think” you are in mortal sin. then later you say, “In my heart, I’m pretty sure this is a venial sin…”. There is your answer.
You cannot be truly in mortal sin in this circumstance.

Did you act poorly? Yes.
Is it Mortal? In my opinion, No.
Should you confess it? Yes.

Say a sincere act of contrition, apologize to your brother for the fight and move on.

A general guide is if you dont know its a mortal sin its not, because that would mean at the time you most likley didnt know. Unless before the act you thought to yourself something on the lines of “I know this is a terrible act against God and im going to do it anyway” then you would not be in a state of mortal sin.

Your fine, but if you really are still in doubt, dont take Eucharist, and go to the confession and let the priest know your scrupuluous.

Thanks for all the posts. I just barely got to Church in time for Confession so I confessed being wrathful, impatient, and uncharitable, so I’m good for now. The reason I wanted to know is because I didn’t necessarily know if I would make it in time and I needed to know so I didn’t receive the Eucharist invalidly.

And yes, I am real.

Yes, I gathered that from this and other posts. That being the case, it is important that you find a regular and trusted confessor to discuss these concerns with. He will be able to help you understand when your sins require you to abstain from receiving the Eucharist, and when they do not. He will help you find ways to discern this, and you will need to trust him and not constantly second guess him (which scrupulous people can struggle with too).

As others have said, internet strangers are not the appropriate people to be advising you regarding your particular sins and circumstances. A regular confessor is.

I’ve seen a few of your posts and I thought maybe you were a made-up person…

A mortal sin, un-repented, sends someone to eternal damnation…does it not?

It’s worrisome that a teenage boy might think calling someone a “brat” is so grave that it would send them hell-bound…

I can think of some things more worrisome for a teenage boy to be doing…
