Guys, when someone’s first post is about being banned, its a pretty sure bet its a disgruntled former member trying to sneak back onto CAF. Just report them and I will take care of the rest.
Thanks

And what is truth ?

Protestants and Catholics and Orthodox and he and she vary.

Not on all, but on this and that.

Why ?

🙂
Truth is found among the authority Christ built on earth. The authority that wrote scriptures, and kept them through generation after generation passing them along with the interpretations. It’s when each individual began interpreting scriptures for themselves that we came to have many doctrines…

It is suspect when someone uses the two differences in what appears to be a justification of many differences. Why aren’t you either Catholic or Orthodox?

What we have with Protestantism has become a ‘mall’ of choices, where one can pick and choose that which they, individually, are comfortable with. Is that truly serving God?

Of course it is… that is, if you sought diligently and with complete honesty the will of the Father and that’s what the Holy Spirit tells you to go to, that’s definitely, irrevocably, completely serving God.

So, you believe the Holy Spirit would send ‘Christians’ in different directions to follow different truths? How can many truths be one truth?

With the ‘mall’ of doctrines, it appears people pick and choose that with what they are willing to do to serve and not serve as He desires we serve, in my honest opinion. It’s serving as they are comfortable with and I’m not sure the Holy Spirit has anything to do with it.

Agreed. Christ is Truth. 👍

The historical record of the Catholic denomination speaks for itself, in safe guarding the Scriptures, of His Church.

You have made your “mall” choice with Catholicism.

And in our choices, we serve, and God judges.

🙂

Catholic is not a denomination. I’ve seen this explained to you before, but I guess some believe if they repeat it enough it might be believed by other than themselves.

I have chosen what scriptures and other documentation has shown to be the Church Christ built. The mall came from private interpretation when each individual decided they could interpret scriptures for themselves, then some of them go off and lead others down that same path. Paul told the Hebrews to obey you prelates. People have made themselves prelates, assuming an authority upon themselves and through themselves.

I’ve asked a few questions and haven’t really seen answers. I’ve seen more questions or your opinion of what I’m doing and statements without any supporting documentation. Now that is ‘curious’.

You have not seen answers that you agree with, and so to you, they are not answers. 😉

What you regard as supporting documentation is but documentation that you support.

I express Catholic denomination, when I see a Catholic view that is locked into the grip of believing the term Church [their definition of it] is their sole prerogative. Otherwise, the conversation becomes intractable, as it relates to the Christian historicity of the concept.

Your use of sarcasm toward me is uncharitable and diminishes your contribution to the discussion.

🙂

I believe that I am in no position to judge how the Holy Spirit works with each individual.

I believe that God’s purposes are not always clear to man except for the belief that He gives each person enough knowledge for him to progress forward. Just like a 5 year old is not thrust into college to learn math - he gets sent to Kindergarten. If, the Catholic church is too much for one to handle, I can completely understand that the Holy Spirit may find that the better path for him is somewhere else with tidbits of truth until he progresses enough to be ready for more truths rather than go to the Catholic church just to fail in an epic manner.

I don’t subscribe to the “My Holy Spirit is better than your Holy Spirit” arguments.

Believe me, while my post was blunt and to the point it was not meant to be sarcastic and I still say that you have answered questions with questions.and I have not noticed any documentation presented.

I said that indirectly, through the Catholic Church, all Churches are a part of the Church that Peter was charged with. I know of no evidence to suggest another Christian Church predating the reformation, with the exception of the great schism which gave us the East and West Catholic Churches. I see a number of Protestants rely on that great schism as if it justifies as many denominations as exist in the world today, or more. The Bible is explicitly clear that we are to be one, of the same mind and judgment. It speaks of men being scattered by every wind of doctrine.

The Bible tells us to obey our prelates. Who are those prelates in your opinion?

There is only one Holy Spirit and I’m not trying to divide Him. I just explained my view of how it’s illogical for me to understand how one Spirit of Truth tells different truths and it still remain one truth. Dividing that truth is presenting the better than argument.

There is ONE truth.

But, here’s what boggles my mind…

A Catholic teaches Jesus is the Son of the Father. Is that true?
Now, how about when a Baptist teaches Jesus is the Son of the Father… does that make it false?

Of course not.

Therefore, when one’s faith is centered on the question of Jesus being the Son of God - it matters not whether he finds that truth in the Baptist church or the Catholic church.

All Christian Churches came through the Catholic Church, directly or indirectly. There was only Catholic until the reformation. The truths they have came from the Catholic Church.

What about the different doctrines like once saved, always saved? Predestination? Infant baptism? Let’s look at Pentecostals alone, some profess you must speak in tongues, others say it’s a sign…which is it? Some Churches accept divorce, abortion, etc. etc. etc. The differences are as great as they are many.

You are correct. But that isn’t my point.

I quoted the flow of the thread that I responded to below. I am not discussing which is true or which isn’t true. I am answering your questions on whether one who is sincerely seeking truth and finds it somewhere outside of the Catholic church is still serving God.

The thread I took part in is this:

I wanted to mention that you and I agree somewhat, considering your analogy of spiritual growth. What’s important is not to think one knows it all and to keep an open mind and heart in their walk, seeking Him.

I still can’t find the Thanks button (if there is such a thing). I would like to Thank this post!

In Jn 14:6 Jesus said “I am the way and the truth…”

Jn 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

Exactly. There have been differences since as you put it “day 1”.

The Holy Spirit would not be to blame. But man.
In order for your theory to be valid, then the weaknesses of men have to be more powerful than God. If man, by falling away from God, can remove His Word from where He placed it, and nullify His promises, then God is weak, and ineffective.
Someone can. They can go by what they believe in their heart. Following their conscience where according to CCC in its depths they are alone with God. Which per CCC they must obey so not to condemn themselves. Having the right to make moral decisions on religious matters without being forced to act contrary to their conscience. This of course all done after much prayer, study, informing, contemplation, and more prayer.
Yes. And while one is praying and informing one’s conscience, one will discover that God will not reveal to one individual something that is contrary to what He has already revealed to His Church.
Code:
Because I'm not going to debate faith and belief with you here. Faith can not be proven with 100% absolute certainty or else it would not be called faith. To begin with, for you or I to even get to the point of Christianity, first one must believe in a Creator. Then the NT story of Christ. To get to your faith, one must then believe in Catholic Church interpretation of Herself, of Scripture, and of ECFs. A lot of faith steps going on along the way.
It is curious that your “faith steps” do not include God. It is all based on “you or I to get to the point”. I think that a faith walk devoid of the HS would, by definition, end up in a place other than where God intended.
I’m certain you are aware some believe Christ founded His Church on what Peter said regarding Christ being the Son of God. Not just on Peter. And that the Church is not the Catholic Church but the entire Body of Believers.
You are setting up a false dichotomy, CMatt. The CAtholic Church teaches that she contains the entire body of believers. These are not contrary thoughts as you suggest.
Christ afterall did say to believe in Him for eternal life.
He did. And He identifies HImself completely with His One Body, the Church. 👍

When one comes to faith in Him, one comes to faith in His Church.
There are some who even if they believe Peter led and if they believe the Catholic Church was the original, believe the Catholic Church has strayed. I’m also certain you are aware of the abuses reformers took note of.
Yes. Such a theory requires that Jesus did not keep His promises.
And as you know some Protestants believe Augustine for instance was not speaking of a physical RP as your faith understands it to be.
Yes, just like twisting the Scriptures, it is possible to twist the writings of the Fathers. One need only avoid certain passages and resist the meaning of others to reach a conclusion opposite of what the author believed.
Some might believe in Jn 6 Christ was talking about believing in Him as the Son, in the Sacrifice on the cross He came down from heaven to make, and that He was speaking of His spirit giving life. A spiritual real presence.
This is another false dichotomy CMatt. Of course all these things are true. Just because something is a spiritual reality does not mean it lacks existence in the physical plane. Jesus had a “real spiritual body” after His resurrection that was able to pass through walls, etc. He still ate, and was touchable in the physical plane. One does not exclude the other.
And those who walked did so because they were still hung up on the literal.
I think they were, but it was also just a lack of faith. They did not trust, as the Apostles did, that the Truth would become clear in time.
Some believe Jn 6:37 speaks open Communion.
Yes. If one rejects enough history and Scripture, as well as the teachings of the Apostles, one can construe any number of heresies.
Or they question other teaching.

Some might believe the Catholic Church became too legalistic.

There are many things in the Bible Christians do not take literally.

Some believers need everything spelled out for them and others understand human minds are finite.
What you seem to be implying, CMatt, is that all of these positions are valid.

On a personal note I don’t particularly strongly feel God in the territorial parish for Catholics in my neighborhood when I’ve attempted worship there.
Is this your measure of Truth? What you do or do not “particularly feel”?

This would explain a lot.
Because to me the decor or aura or feel of the parish is too extravagent. Marble. EMHC’s in robes. And most importantly the last homily I heard there the priest said some were complaining about this. But that people have no right to complain about expenditures on decor vs the poor because his answer to the poor was to get a job.
It appears that you have still not forgiven this priest, CMatt. Lent might be a good time to consider this, since, if you continue to hold this against HIm, your heavenly father will not forgive you.

It does not sound like you have answered the call to sit it the pew at Mass and pray for him, either. Sometimes we are offended by things because God wants us to get busy with the warfare on a spiritual plane.
I definitely did not feel God there at that moment and have not been back. Btw way some see the same extravagance in the Vatican. And thus no matter how much the Catholic Church gives to the poor, more could be given.
It is easy to sit back and find fault with the way others walk their walk.
Code:
As I believe though it was Dokimas who said, go where you sense the presence of God.
When one’s eye is dark, how great is that darkness!
Code:
Some find too much emphasis on conservative political issues in today's Catholic Church vs things Jesus actually talked about. Read Matt 25:36 - 47 for some of Christ's ideas about what leads to eternal life. Read in Matthew about peacemakers being blessed.
Making peace cannot be done by conmpromising the Truth. The issues, CMatt, exist in society. Jesus talked quite a bit about conservative views on issues. He taught the Aposltes every day for 3 years. He empowered them with the Seat of Moses, showed them how to interpret the scriptures, and gifted them with the ability to guide the faithful.
Code:
Then of course more recently you have the child abuse cases and cover ups. Which brings into the play the whole idea of knowing false teachers by their fruits.
Indeed it does, but neither the false teachers, nor their bad fruits “subtract” from the once for all divine deposit of faith Christ gave to the Church. Many have a deficient view of the Church, and do not recognize that the HS cannot err, and since He is the Soul of the Church, she is infallible. Truth is not defined by those who depart from it.
And regardless of their ability to sin, if whether or not true Apostolic successors preaching the sanctity of life would not have known better than to cover up child molestation.
Yes, we would assume that they should know better. However, people who depart from the Truth don’t invalidate the Apostolic Succession, either.
So many things cause folks to question. And one abuse or err alone can raise doubt in the hearts and minds and consciences of some as to the entirety of what the Church says. And they lose faith in the Catholic Church.
Indeed. One has to wonder if “they” ever had any faith in the first place. 😉

One of the reasons such scandals are so serious is because they do have the power to drive such persons, weak in faith and morals, further away from the Truth. This is why Jesus taught that it would be better for them to have a millstone around their neck.
you asked to be more specific and I hope this is specific enough for you and it helps in your understanding. Again I have no interest in debating others faiths and beliefs with you here. I am simply answering your question. God bless you on your faith walk and God bless all of His chidren as we walk His earth. And peace.
Yes, you have given a very comprehensive answer, CMatt, and it does shed a lot of light on the reasons that you frequently post calumnies and outright lies about the Church. CLearly your faith has been very wounded.
