There has been a change to the requirements for Plenary Indulgences. This is important for those of us who say a weekly Rosary before Holy Mass.

Thank you so much AlexB and the Tridentine Community News for allowing this information to be posted here!

We are pleased to report that we have finally located the
appropriate authoritative document: On January 29, 2000, William
Cardinal Baum, the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary (the
Vatican department which oversees Indulgences) issued a letter,
“The Gift of the Indulgence,” which stated:

“It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental
Confession and especially Holy
Communion and the prayer for the
Pope’s intentions take place on the
same day that the indulgenced work
is performed; but it is sufficient that
these sacred rites and prayers be
carried out within several days

***(about 20) *before or after the
indulgenced act. Prayer for the
Pope’s intentions is left to the choice
of the faithful, but an “Our Father”
and a “Hail Mary” are suggested.
One sacramental Confession suffices
for several plenary indulgences, but
a separate Holy Communion and a
separate prayer for the Holy
Father’s intentions are required for
each plenary indulgence
.” [Emphasis added]

That is not new, nothing has changed in the requirements. It used to be 7 days before or after which would give you within 14 not 20. But that is that is the only difference I see.

Within the given time period is Sacramental Confession required even if a person is in a state of grace?

Yes, one can confess venial sins or just ask for the graces of the Sacrament. This requirement is basically Confession twice a month. Since in most parishes Reconciliation is not available daily, usually only on Saturday for a very limited time.

The difference in the days was what I was pointing out.
Thank you for clairifying, Br Rich!! 🙂

Okay thanks. For me its easier as we have Confession on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Me too!
We have confessions 1/2 before every Holy Mass and two hours on Saturdays.

It’s just a matter of getting the hubby out the door early enough!

This is also important for those who gain plenary indulgences through the half-hour of prayerfully reading sacred scripture. I believe there is also one for going to adoration, but I’m not sure of the time, if it’s one hour or less.

Our parish only has confession twice a year. 😦 I am hoping with the change of preist we just had we can get it more often-- at least once a month would be nice.

Can you go to another parish for confession?

I can but I still think the opportunity should be given at our parish more often. Unfortunately, even when it is offered it doesn’t seem much taken advantage of. We have active attendance of 300-350 and the last confession opportunity was over in less than an hour. It was listed as “starts at 6:30 and ends when everyone is done.” And our priest is pretty chatty. I am hoping eveyone just is in the habit of going elsewhere.

I do too!
Maybe some prayers to St. Monica will help. 🙂

Our little neighborhood parish has Confession every Saturday at 11am, and the person in the parish office said that Father is usually there alone and no one shows up. (I belong to a different parish for routine Sunday mass, and if I wish to go to Confession prior to mass I go to an entirely different parish for that!) :o

It’s sad that where our priests are trying, no one shows up, and where there are those who would love to go, there is no priest willing or available. 😦

Well I just looked at the reconciliation schedule our new priest had at his old parish and they had it 4 times a WEEK!! It is a much larger parish, but I am hopeful. He was the only preist.

Our old priest lived about 25 miles from the church, and he was past retirement age, so he wasn’t terribly involved. We only have mass on Sunday.

…or what? It doesn’t count and you spend more time in purgatory?

Isn’t there also a requirement that one be free from attachment to sin in order to gain the Plenary Indulgence, in addition to the above-mentioned requirements? Or has that changed?

Peace.

3*. To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. *
*4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: *— have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin;
— have sacramentally confessed their sins;
— receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required);
— pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.

EDIT Almost every parish I have been involved in has daily mass and weekly confession.
