Hey Phil,

Since you said choose the “best” answer, I choose the first one, for two reasons: (1) lead has in fact been changed to gold; and (2) we may not be able to do it now, but if creating gold from any other element can theoretically be done by adding or subtracting protons, neutrons, and electrons; I don’t think it’s outside our future technological capabilities to do so.

What do you hope to determine/evaluate by means of this poll and what intrinsic value does it have for the human race(sometimes termed the rat race)? By the way you totally bypassed the source of gold held by the little guy at the end of the rainbow, I haven’t gone looking because I don’t know which end he is at.

Sorry to disagree, but #1 is an all right option. The matter of the universe is made of elements, and they can in theory be transmuted into gold. It would just involve rearrranging the nuclei of the elements in nuclear reactions that would involve tremendous amounts of energy. In short, the gold you produce wouldn’t be worth the effort it took to do it, but it can be done. Sorry for the geeky tangent.

Everything is made of atoms, atoms are made of protons, electrons, and neutrons. Therefore, if we were able to take apart a chunk of lead (for example) and pile it into stacks of protons, electrons, and neutrons, then we should be able to put those pieces back together in a different order to get a chunk of gold, with maybe a few subatomic particles left over. I checked #1, although we obviously don’t have the ability to actually do what it suggests.
