Hi all,

I am here in Las Vegas and the past few months we have seen fake Catholic churches popping up. They front with names like St. Valentine, St. Martin of Tours, St. Thomas and etc. There is one that puts up a sign that says St. So and So Catholic mass here at x time with an arrow. It is in a Mariott or something.

Anyone in town, or anywhere else seen this type of thing. I almost want to call them and say you are deceiving people.

I know one parish puts in its bulletin that the following “churches”
do not fufill our Sunday obligation.

I know we can’t “copyright the name Catholic” but what gives???

In many cases these seem to be Old Catholic parishes that do have a tendency to confuse Catholics. There isn’t much we can do about them setting up shop, but most dioceses will at least notify the parishes about them and, in turn, the parishes should notify the parishioners.

If non-Catholic churches are calling themselves Catholic, the bishop ought to be doing a lot more than nothing. How are tourists, suppose to know that these churches are bogus?

In Mexico, the larger hotels and resorts will have a priest come in and say Sunday Mass for the convenience of the guests. Perhaps hotels do this is Las Vegas, also.

Monica: I’m in Vegas, too, and I’ve seen the signs you speak of. St. Thomas is, I believe, Old Catholic. I’m not sure about St. Valentine. Our Lady of Victory is the SSPX. We were cautioned against them all several years ago in the *Desert Clarion . *God bless and “Viva, Las Vegas.” Thank you, thank you, thank you very much!

Here in Orlando we have atleast three churches not in full communion with Rome;

-St. Thomas More Chapel (SSPX)

-Sacred Heart Traditional Catholic Church (Independant)

-St. Michael the Archangel Church (Judging from ads, liberal as heck. Offer sacrements to all? Non-dogmatic? Who knows if the priest was even ordained? If so a heretic in schism anyway).

We have an SSPX chapel and Independant chapel offering the Traditional Latin Mass. Yet, no Indult Mass based on the 1962 Missal. However, an Indult is planned by the bishop and I pray that he brings back the alter of God.

I thought there was something like that, actually. I thought I read somewhere on the forums that they are going against “Catholics for Choice” or something like that for the false usage of Catholic in the name. And I know I’ve heard of colleges getting stripped of the Catholic name. So, I don’t think just any business or organization can call themselves Catholic.
