So, because Jesus drank water when He was hot and thirsty or ate fish when He was hungry, does that make water and fish sacred???
No, but the fact that Papal Encyclicals are still written first in Latin ought to have some meaning, no?

I’m a grad student in medieval history. A good chunk of it is Church history (specifically from the Middle Ages, so that doesn’t help me much on these forums, considering the disputes are generally over documents from the 19th, 20th centuries, and deal with different issues (the secular monarchies are more in my area), and knowledge of Latin is indispensable. Why? Because it’s the language of the Church, still even today. Centuries and centuries of Latin.

Is it good that this person wrote about going to a Mass, and it turns into a debate!

We should just be left to witness to people looking for information on the traditional Mass. Maybe even start organizing for one. There are trad forums for all the polemics. Besides, the polemics don’t do anyone any good anyway. We should just be guiding people with questions into the traditional Mass, cause that just might be where they are most comfortable.

Well, this is a traditional subforum. Studying medieval history? Excellent!

Iesus Nasarensis Rex Iudaeorum, was written on the holy cross of Our Lord. That a language could be given a more glorious praise I cannot see how.

It certainly was not written in English.

God intended it there and God does not make mistakes.
Hmmm. Let me see. Perhaps God did indeed intend for “Jesus Nasarensis Rex, Judaeiorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” to be written on the board above Christ’s head on his cross. God does work in mysterious ways, as Pontius Pilate was the one who ordered it written. His intention, in my opinion, was to aggravate the Sanhedrin. Pilate had the last word.😉

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy debates, but there’s so much hostility either way. Someone posts, saying they wanna try a TLM, and the thread ends up all about the SSPX, when the person is most likely going for a diocesan TLM to start with. It sends the wrong message, imo, that seeking a TLM, even an approved one, makes you a “quasi-schismatic.” I’m an ICKSP person myself, and I’ve only read about the SSPX. They just aren’t relevant to the discussion. It’s not like when someone says they went to the OF, we immediately start up with, “Did he folllow the Eucharistic prayer?” “Was their liturgical dance?”

Right. At times when one is trying to just discuss the TLM schism is brought up, or people who don’t think the New Mass is valid, etc. I agree with what you’re saying. Good point.

Yes, but who made Pilate put it there? Pilate said “What I have written I have written.” God worked through the Persian king who led the Israelites into captivity. God also worked through Pharao even though he hardened his heart. God worked his marvel of redemption through the Roman soldiers, even though they never intended it that way. God worked his greatest marvel through the cross. It was intended for shame and death but for us it’s life and mercy.

Just my thoughts.

There are a number of other reasons why Latin is a sacred language, read Veterum Sapientiae.
