The Bishops’ endorsement on the Biblical Text (Translation) applies both to (a) The Translation and (b) The Footnotes & Commentaries.etc.

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (RSV-ce) as well ast the New Catholic Answer Bible (NAB) carries SEPARATE approval endorsement for (a) And (b)

My understanding of the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur authority on a document indicate that the document (usually a book) contains no Moral or Doctrinal error in the context of church teaching. These approvals are binding on the ENTIRE content of the work in question.

See, I don’t think that is the case. I think it has been said that that is the case, but I don’t necessarily buy it, in the strictest sense. See here:

The RSV-CE received a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur in 1965-66. The Ignatius Study Bible is a separate work requiring a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur for its study material, even though the biblical text is that of the RSV-CE.

Similar considerations would apply for the NAB with the 1970 OT, 1986 NT, and 1991 Psalms, since the study material in the New Catholic Answer bible is a work separate from that of the biblical text.

Right, but in both of those cases, you are talking about secondary releases that contain third party notes. I understand that those are cases involving notes, but they are additions. What I think we are really wanting to know is what about the original, standard publication’s notes? One would assume that the Imprimatur covers those, which is disappointing.

A poster to the “NAB - Revised Psalms” thread was taken in by the credentials of a “scholar” who wrote some of the material for the NAB study bible herein referred to. Said “scholar” tripped all over himself justifying inclusive language.

My point being that those who grant Nihil Obstat and Imprimaturs may not actually read the content of the material they are approving; they rely on “scholars” like the one above.

Would that Bishop Bruskewitz of Nebraska were allowed to over-rule some of these approvals and revoke them! And, should he need an “expert” on whom to rely - may I suggest Fr. John Corapi?

The approvals do not guarantee a good translation. They merely express the opinion of the authorities that the contents do not go against faith or morals.
