"In a better place now" - what did Catholics traditionally say?

You can’t help people by saying happy and peppy things like “celebrating their life” and wearing white.
Actually, my experience is much different. I have suffered a few losses recently, and Catholic funerals were provided. They were happy and peppy. Great, upbeat music selections. Priests wore white. Some attendees wore black. Many others wore brighter, more cheerful colors. The best part was the “celebration of life” aspect. Talk about the person being in God’s arms now, just as they had been their whole life. No talk about hell, or not knowing.

I believe funerals are for the living, to give comfort and consolation. The ones I recently attended were a wonderful demonstration of people caring for each other the way I believe God wants us to. They absolutely helped those who were grieving.

I think it is across the board. I lost one young person to drug overdose, one young person to illness, and an old person due to natural causes (old age).

I am certainly praying for you, that’s a lot of loss. All immediate family members?

I am deeply sorry for your losses, and I pray you have found some comfort.

Traditionally, wakes provided the kind of comfort and “celebration of life” that you cite. Wake culture still persists in many places, and I’d like to see it become more widespread. Nobody does it better than the Irish.
