In Canada over Easter, what are the Liturgical Norms?

Does anyone know where I can find out what the liturgical norms are in Canada? Are they the same as the USA…?

I’ll be driving through either Edmonton or Calgary on Easter Sunday (Not sure which route I’ll be taking yet…). So I was wondering how different the Mass is in Canada…

As an example:
-Eucharist in the hand or on the tongue as the norm…?

Any advice on good orthodox parishes to visit would be helpful as well…

Thanx!

Eucharist in the hand or on the tongue is up to the local bishop to decide. So even though every diocese I know of in the USA allows communion in the hand this could change as it is up to the bishop to decide for his diocese.

The only difference I know is the Creed. In the USA the Nicene Creed is recited at the Mass except for Masses for children, then the Apostles Creed may be subsituted. In Canada the Apostles Creed my be recited at any Mass.

The postures, when to kneel, may also be different as Rome approves them according to the requests of each episcopal conference.

At have noticed a few occasions where the Kiss of Peace is not done by the faithful.

Doing so is only an option is the norm, not the norm itself, but you might notice it’s absence.

Speaking as a Canadian…I’ve attended masses in several dioceses in Canada, and most of them seem to be the same as my home diocese, Vancouver.

I find, though, that the ‘norms’ seem to vary more depending on which parish you’re attending the mass at. There are many variations as to when people are standing or kneeling…however, nobody gets too worked up if you kneel when others are standing…it’s that polite Canadian thing! 😉

All the parishes I’ve attended, it’s up to each individual whether to receive the Eucharist on the tongue or in the hand. Some parishes still have altar rails and use them…others not.(I’m a convert and was most confused on how to deal with that situation the first time I encountered it, thank goodness I wasn’t sitting up at the front!!! :o )
Other than the fact that most parishes recite the Apostles Creed instead of the Nicene Creed, you’ll probably find that mass in Canada is pretty much the same as mass in the States.

Here are links to both of the dioceses you may be passing through…they both list mass times for all the parishes in their diocese:

Edmonton:

Calgary:

Both dioceses have very orthodox bishops who tend to be very outspoken in regards to publicly upholding the teachings of the Church…especially Bishop Henry of Calgary.

Here’s a link to the Catholic newspaper for the province, the Western Catholic Reporter, it gives a good snapshot of the Catholic climate there:

Although it’s still some time away, I pray that you have a safe trip and enjoy our beautiful country! 🙂
