In Eastern & Oriental Orthodox is the bishop of Rome (The Pope) the successor to Peter?

They usually argue for a “Bishop amongst equals”. I don’t buy it though. They DO believe that Pope Francis is the successor of Peter. THAT said, here’s a question, if the great schism ends, who would be the Patriarch of Antioch? (Since, the Peter was the Bishop of Antioch) Look at how many there are right now.

I think it depends on which E.O. or O.O. you’re talking about. Some would acknowledge it, but would also say the Pope is the “first in honor” only, and has no authority over any of the others.

Some deny that the Pope is even a priest. Some deny that the Latin Church has any “jurisdiction” over anything but Rome and the nearby countryside. For some, the Pope can only be the successor of Peter if he quits being Catholic and becomes Orthodox.

A lot of it depends on which sub-group of Orthodox one is talking about, and where. One needs to remember, too, that there is no “central authority” in orthodoxy. Each major bishop is more or less autonomous of all the others. So, while one group might accept the Pope as the successor of Peter, that doesn’t mean they all do.

Or anywhere else to speak of, for some. They don’t much like to admit it to Catholics, but the E.O. is extremely territorial, particularly those of the Moscow Patriarchate. Orthodoxy is territorial of its nature, and the R.O.C. claims exclusive right to exist at all in the Americas, Asia and most of Europe.
