We talked last Sunday and she reminded me of something that I had forgotten. That if I decide on a church, continue to go to it’s services and she sees change in me from going, then she will follow me.

She further reminded me that she had said something similar before we got married. That if I found a way (finding a way meaning marriage without it costing alot of money) then she would follow me. I had found that way, and it was through civil court (remember that I wasn’t a practicing Catholic when we got married).

So what I need to do, is show commitment to the Catholic church, go to mass each week and show changes within my life, then she will follow me.

What I require is patience, and that is something that I am not really known for in regards to matters such as these. Fishing and hunting, yes, but not this.

Lord help me!

*we have had a really good week so far. We seem to be connecting more and arguing less.

That’s really promising that she brought that up.

Do you think her meds are working?

It was actually I who brought it up. I had written in my daily journal a sincere prayer to God abut my wanting my family to be a Catholic family and there were a few other things mentioned about con-validating my marriage and such. I allowed her to read it at the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

It ended up being a good conversation starter.

I don’t know if her meds are working or not to be honest. What seemed to work is that she asked me to pray together this past Monday. She asked that we pray together for God to lift the fogginess and clutter from her mind. I was reluctant at first because I do not like praying out loud, even in front of my wife, but did so. She thanked me later that day because she said she has noticed a difference already. That her thoughts are much clearer and she can focus a bit better.

That’s wonderful news! Remember, when you feel the need to stay “strong” it also means that you give your weakness to the Lord. Jesus is there to carry us when we struggle. Remember the lost sheep. Remember that you and she are infinitely valuable to God.
It’s ok to be weak, so long as we ask God for the strength to persevere. St. Pio counsels us to pray constantly. If she desires that you pray out loud with her, don’t be afraid. Often children have a hard time forming their thoughts in front of a Father. But a father doesn’t scold. A father loves. You both are loved. Praying for you both. God bless you.

Thank you for your response.

I am not afraid to pray out loud, I am just not a vocal person in prayer.

How wonderful! It is great to hear about God’s working in people’s lives 🙂
May I recommend Spiritual Combat by Dom Scupoli, a book St Francis de Sales carried around in his pocket? It’s online; I can’t get a link right now but if you can’t find it, ask me.

I suggest it because he talks about the need to rely on God rather than ourselves, as well as practical advice about specific difficulties people have.

Praying for you & your wife.

This is excellent news. I willbe praying for patience for you. Yes get to Mass each week and try your best to start a morning or evening prayer routine - doesn’t have to be anything long or fancy, just enough to keep you on track each day during the week.

So glad to hear you two are communicating better.

I’m so glad that things seem to be looking up for you, your wife, and your marriage. Praying together is HUGE…in fact, your post reminded me that my DH and I should do it more, even though we’re rather private people and it doesn’t come naturally to us at all. So, thank you for that. 🙂

Just the fact that she’s seeing that her mind is “cluttered” is a huge step. I’m no mental health professional, and you’ve probably got a pretty good idea what anyone’s $0.02 are worth in this economy 😛 , but it sounds as though her medication might be helping some.

Someone for whose intercession you might pray during this process is Elisabeth Leseur. Elisabeth Leseur is considered a Servant of God, which is the first of several “levels,” if you will, to being declared a saint by the Church. The brief version of her story is that she spent her life praying for her husband’s reversion to Catholicism as shortly after their marriage, he became a vehement atheist. After her death, he not only reverted–he became a Dominican priest! Asking her for her intercession, even if it’s just saying something like “Elisabeth Leseur, pray for us” every day, can’t possibly hurt, right? (Of course, I hope and pray that your wife’s heart changes rather sooner than Leseur’s husband’s did.)

If you can, do let us know how things continue to progress.

Friend… I hope that in fishing and hunting, you are being a “good steward” of the creatres of the Earth, and all her bounty.

The most meaningful “hunt” of your life is that of seeking family, union with God, restoration of health for your wife (it seems she is seeking good health as well, as she is taking medication for her issues, and prays with you with an open heart), Every small step, no matter how tiny, is a step toward the peace, love and contentment you seek. Every day, every night, every moment you live in reaching out towards your goal of being at one with God is part of that “hunt.”

I am not a Christian, but I believe there is a saying, perhaps it is a Biblical quote (someone please help me here LOL) – “Be still, and know that I am.” Is that right?

When you fish, as I remember my father did, you can sit or stand sometimes for hours in silence, waiting on the chance for a single strike. Try to apply that silent patience here and now, waiting on God to touch your family as you already have decided to reach out and touch God.

I wish you joy, prosperity, and good health. May you and your family find contentment in what you seek.

Rest assured, that I only keep that which I will eat.

You are close on the Bible quote. It is, “Be still , and know that I am God.” You only left out God, so you did well.

Thank you for your response.

I still haven’t been able to bring myself to pray to saints.

I still haven’t been able to bring myself to pray to saints.
Then perhaps chat with them, as you might with a good friend. Maybe read a few of their life stories, anecdotes or personal histories. You may find some things in common. :o

Thank you for the correction on the quote, by the way. Y`know, I thought to add the missing word - God - but I thought then about another quote - “I am Who am” - and got the two confused. 👍

Thank you and bless you, from the bottom of my heart, for being an honorable hunter/fisherman!! I can respect what you do. It’s those who kill for “fun” who turn my stomach. Death of any sort is not “fun.” A spiritual Brother of mine many years ago got a call from someone in his small town in Virginia, telling him about nearly 10 deer carcasses which he had seen dumped beneath an overpass. Dumped! Ugh. It took my Brother a few days of working with his wife and young son, but he did his best at salvaging meat for his family, antlers, bones and feet for artistic endeavors and knife handles, and the skins which they tanned themselves. The disrespect for (and waste of) the creatures’ lives made him cry.

Well, we think of it not as praying to saints as asking them to pray for us, kind of like we here pray for you and your wife. I mean, just because they’re dead doesn’t mean they don’t pray, or don’t care about other people, right? However, another topic, another day–and I’m genuinely glad that things seem to be working out better for your marriage. 🙂

I actually haven’t hunted since 2005. It was Thanksgiving Day and I was hunting in the midst of a blizzard. Thankfully, where I was hunting was only across the road from where I lived… lol. Before that it was about 7 years that I hunted last. All in all, I think I hunted a total of 10 years and only ever shot one deer. Every other time I saw nothing, or missed my shot. I didn’t care one way or the other as I was out in nature and that is what mattered most to me.

Seeing that many carcasses would have upset me as well. After all, I am someone who stops when he sees a turtle crossing the road so that I can grab it and help it across without it getting hit. Biggest turtle I ever did that with was a 60 pound snapping turtle.

Talk about being careful… lol.

I do understand what you are all saying, I truly do, but I am happy just praying to our Lord as it seems to me that he is already working things out for our marriage.

OT, I admit, but this made me furious. Really, who wastes food and resources like that?! I knew a couple of guys once who hunted but didn’t like the taste of venison. Being responsible human beings, though (unlike the cretins who did what you described) they donated the meat to local soup kitchens, making it a win-win situation for pretty much everyone involved. IIRC, they had an agreement with the local deer processing place that the hunters paid for their own hunting permits, ammo, etc, and the processors donated the time and equipment use in order to send the meat to the soup kitchen in usable form. I thought that was a great idea.
