In heaven will we be able to comprehend things that we cannot comprehend even NOW?

(this post was recently made by myself in this thread, but I think it deserves its own discussion)

We are taught that, in heaven, we will possess “glorified bodies” (free from death, disease, and corruption of any kind). But there is no Church teaching that I know of that teaches that we will possess “glorified minds” - ie, significantly greater intelligence or learning capacity.

Modern science understands MANY things that most people cannot comprehend. My wife was a biology major in college, and I helped her learn the Krebs Cycle - a “basic” teaching in biology. Fortunately, I had notes and flash-cards to help her learn, because I was utterly incapable of grasping any part of it myself. The ONLY part of it that I remember is that life forms “uptake” oxygen and sucrose.

I was a math major, and my wife helped me master trigonometric integration in a similar fashion. She could not have ever solved even the most simple problem either then or now.

I never learned the Krebs cycle, and my wife never learned advanced math. As I have grown older, I have developed an interest in quantum physics, and have studied the subject extensively. The Standard Model holds up very well, but the Holographic Principle holds up equally well, and both have been put forward by Nobel Laureate physicists. I doubt that one in 1000 people (and I am not among the one) really understand either theory, and I doubt that one in a million understand one or the other AND the Krebs cycle.

I find nothing in Catholic theology that says that we, in heaven, will have such an intellect that we can properly understand even these very basic things that are known to us on earth RIGHT NOW.

I believe all the things we know today will pale in comparison to what we will understand. We will just go “ohhh”, and our mouths will be shut for fear of opening them and saying something stupid that made sense in the past and made us intelligent in this life, but in the future makes us think we were really just children in pre-school.

Having said that, I cannot answer your question, because that is just the way I currently believe, I do not know Catholic teaching on this subject. I would be interested in answers too.

St. John wrote in his first epistle that we will “know as we are known.” I don’t know if that counts as having a “glorified mind,” but it certainly sounds like there is an improvement.

(Edit: I’m glad I caught that typo before it got set in concrete and made me look like an idiot :bigyikes: )

I believe that we WILL have glorified minds in heaven.
But perhaps not in the way that some might think,

I believe that our minds will be simpler. All the things that currently clutter and conflict our minds will be washed away and we will have proper focus - and only on the things that matter.

Physics won’t matter. because we will not be bound by the physics of time or space. Mathematics won’t matter because we won’t be trying to solve some problem or other.
Philosophy won’t matter because we will be suspended in and supported by Love.
And Love will make fear and conflict non-existent…

Because of this simplicity - receiving the Kingdom like a child - and being perfected in Love - we will actually understand all things better.

Peace
James

Hi David,

Heaven is seelng God “face to face”. Whatever we need or wish to understand, we will see it in God.

I think our minds will be like sponges like how children’s minds are here before they grow up and their minds become cluttered with worry and adult problems. I believe the human mind has an amazing ability to continue to grow and understand things, especially the way our minds were made before the fall of mankind, when our bodies and minds became corrupted. So in Heaven our minds and body will go back to their original pre-fall way that God made us originally. So I believe we will continue to learn and grow for all of eternity. 🙂

Yes I agree with this! 🙂 And even without glorified minds, even if we are not more intelligent up there than down here we will still learn more and grow more and we will be smarter. We are no more genetically intelligent than people from the biblical days, but if you were to go back in time and drop a biblical person into our world today, they would be totally baffled and confused with our technology of today and everyday things that we don’t give a thought to, they wouldn’t even have any frame of reference to begin to understand computers and microwaves and TV, you couldn’t say computers are like TV because they don’t know what TV is, you can’t say TV is like radio because they don’t know what radio is etc. No frame of reference, and we’d have to watch them like we would kids so they wouldn’t hurt themselves on a hot stove or with a microwave etc. Because they wouldn’t know. Electricity would be a wonder to them and simply turning on a light switch would make them say wow, till they learned about our world. They might have a heart attack if we take them into a Walmart. LOL 🙂 We are not smarter than they are, we just have more knowledge and I think when we arrive in Heaven we will be like that biblical person dropped into our world today, only much better with no dangers. 🙂

In heaven we won’t need
  • faith, because we now enjoy and see face to face the object of our faith
  • hope, because we now enjoy completely the object of our hope
In heaven we have our memory intellect and will perfectly reordered in love.
