In missing Mass, did I sin?

I realize that you have probably answered this many times. I am a convert and I’m still figuring some things out. This past Sunday, I was 1 1/2 hours away from home with five of my kids (ages 12-5) on an ice fishing trip. We were staying in a motel in a town with a catholic church. We were going to go to mass that morning and then head home. We woke up Sunday morning to a blinding snowstorm. I decided to head home at the earliest possible moment and skip mass. Maine roads are spotty at best even in good weather and we live in a rural area. The storm was due to go on until nighttime. We never miss mass but I made an exception this time because of the lengthy travel involved. Also, my father in law told me once that missing mass is permissible if you’re traveling. Am I in a state of mortal sin now?

Thanks.
