In Mormonism, why did Jesus's suffering in Gethsemane atone?

I just found out today that Mormons believe that Jesus atoned for our sins not only on the cross, but in the Garden of Gethsemane (where He was arrested). This is a quote from an article on mormon.org:
It is impossible to put into words the full meaning of the Atonement, which is the most important and most transcendent event in the history of the world. Through His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross, the Savior atoned for our sins. This is the good news for all people!
We can’t fully understand how Jesus suffered for our sins. But we know that in the Garden of Gethsemane, the weight of our sins caused Him to feel such agony that He bled from every pore (Doctrine and Covenants 19:16-17).
Can someone, Mormon or otherwise, explain to me why Jesus’s temporal suffering in Gethsemane is considered atonement? And why He is said to have atoned for us twice?

Thanks, and God bless! 👍

Well, Jesus suffering began at Gethsemane and ended with him dying on the cross. So I actually think this is in line with the orthodox faith. But I’m not saying Mormons are orthodox I’m just clarifying.

Christ did not suffer twice, but only once: suffering which started in the garden and ended on the cross. I believe that this is also the Catholic view.

Where and under what circumstances was the atoning sacrifice of the Son of God made? Was it on the Cross of Calvary or in the Garden of Gethsemane? It is to the Cross of Christ that most Christians look when centering their attention upon the infinite and eternal atonement. And certainly the sacrifice of our Lord was completed when he was lifted up by men; also, that part of his life and suffering is more dramatic and, perhaps, more soul stirring. But in reality the pain and suffering, the triumph and grandeur, of the atonement took place primarily in Gethsemane.

Atonement pre-suppositions is that you understand its meaning. Jesus suffered for the reason that the higher cylinders is His *divine *property.
