Hello again, as i have posted before I am currently in RCIA and am trying to find the right direction in my life ie; marriage or religious life. I cameacross a verse in Luke chapter 20 verse 34 and 35 which statesJesus said to them ,"the children of this age marry and re marry; 35 but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and the resurrection of the dead neithier marry or are given in marriage. 36 they can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. This talk with Jesus is in response to the Sadducess who were trying to trap him by asking about the ressurection. So does it mean its good to marry in this life or not to? Thanks!

Religious life is an objectively higher calling than marriage, but not everyone is called to it. In fact, most people are called to marriage. But don’t think that because fewer people have a higher calling, you should give up at the idea that you may be one of them. God doesn’t choose the worthy but makes worthy those he chooses. Moreover, St. Thomas teaches that religious life is such a sure road to Heaven that one need not deliberate long or get the advice of many friends before entering. When in doubt in discerning our vocation, we should start with the objectively highest calling, and try it out, and if the door closes go to the next highest. For a man it would start with applying to a seminary, then monasticism, then active religious life, and so on. All under the guidance of an experience vocation director, of course.

Congratulations for participating in RCIA and assuming that today (Easter Vigil) is your big day, welcome into the Church.

My advice is to pray, pray, pray. There is no better substitute than prayer in discerning your vocation! The Holy Spirit will do his work in your heart if you are open to it.

It is great to enter the religious life and it is great to be married. Both vocations have great fruits. A very good priest that I once worked with for many years always said that there are no bad vocations! He loved God dearly as a good priest. I love God dearly by being a good husband and father. Both he and I have had the blessing of sharing God’s message with others. Whichever vocation you are pointed (or pushed) towards, embrace it and do it well!

I will pray for you and your vocation!
Peace.

It is absolutely a good thing to marry; otherwise we wouldn’t be here. 😃

You don’t have to make a decision about this right away, especially not if you feel “guilted” in any way into one or the other. If you become Catholic, you will likely have to wait at least a year or two before “seriously” discerning religious life, so you will have plenty of time to become comfortable with both Catholicism, and with your possible vocation in life.
