In need of catholic psychiatrist in Atlanta area

Hello,

I am having some very bad problems that I need help with in my life. Things that have happened in my past and that I’m still trying to work through. I’ve been praying about it and still feel I need to speak with a professional.

I’ve researched several different websites on the internet looking for someone in my area and have come up empty handed. I’ve called my parish and the Atlanta diocese and have been recommended to go to Catholic Social Services. They have a few counselors there, but I need to speak with an actual psychiatrist. My parish office also recommended I call Catholic Services for counseling.

Please does anyone know of a psychiatrist in the Atlanta or Metro Atlanta area? I have searched and searched and asked and asked and cannot come up with anyone.

Yes, I tried that several times starting a few months ago. I was hoping there would be someone added each time I looked. But there is no one. I could go to anyone around here, but I really don’t want to go to someone that doesn’t have the same beliefs as I do or that just says something like, "It’s ok…just be good to yourself blah…blah…blah…

Thank you for your kindness. I know God will bring the right person to me. It just seems like I’ve exhausted every avenue possible. There must be a Catholic psychiatrist out there somewhere. This is a big area.

Catholic Radio has a call-in show where people can speak with Catholic therapists. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Colleen Kelly Mast and Ray Guarendi are the hosts. Very good advice.

Well, I tried Dr. Ray. I sent him an email and he very quickly responded! Unfortunately he said he knows of no one in my area and suggested I go to a secular psychiatrist. I think I may have to do that. 😦 Thank you for all of your help!

I am glad you were able to get an answer so quickly!

I have had to use a neuro-psych in our area who is Mormon and she has been very helpful with “textbook” information. I use the Catechism, prayer and Catholic radio to fill in the gaps. 😃

LJR - my experience with Atlanta psychiatrists is that they are very medication focused. They are going to be interested in your symptoms, side effects, and med levels. It’d be pretty rare to find a psychiatrist who is interested in doing any kind of CBT or talk therapy with you. With that in mind, a secular ***psychiatrist ***or nurse practitioner for medication and a catholic ***therapist *** to help you work through your problems may be a good way to go.

I highly recommend PACT Atlanta - they are terrible about answering their phones, but once you actually set up an appointment, the doctors are very knowledgeable.

Metropolitan Counseling Services is another good bet. They have very open minded staff and they also have a lot of student counselors so there is a big variety of people to work with.
 
Thank you so much! This is another good choice. You are right about the meds. I am currently on prozac but this is just from my family Dr. I googled PACT and they look like they have a good team of people working there. It’s not that far from my home either. Thanks again!:o
