Hi everyone, I’m reasonably new to Catholicism and am starting to feel the depression take hold again.

Can anyone recommend some inspirational verses / quotes from The Bible please?

Thank you in advance

When my world is closing in on me, I holler out loud, Philippians 4:4 -

Rejoice in the Lord, always! I will say it again: Rejoice!

Peace and all Good!

Deauteronomy 3:18:

It is the LORD who goes before you; he will be with you and will never fail you. So do not fear or be dismayed.

Mary.

Offhand I don’t have any bible verses handy, but I write poems. Maybe you would like a funny poem. It may cheer you up.

BUGS

Hi, everyone!

I know you can’t love me
Because I’m ugly
I understand.

It’s OK to abhor me,
So, don’t adore me -
That’s all right.

When you call the bug man
He’ll drive in his van
I’ll run and hide.

If by chance he sprays me,
It won’t faze me -
I’ll just say goodbye.

I’ll go live elsewhere
I know you won’t care
I’m out of sight.

But just remember
In September
I’ll sneak back at night.

Have a look at A Bible Passage for Each Trial from Catholic.net.
There’s is an online Bible at the bottom to look up the passage, too.

“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17

The entire Book of Job. In a nutshell, God allows Satan to torment us (all of us), but like Job, we must persevere in these times of trouble and place complete faith in God. God is close to those with a crushed spirit, and the righteous one’s seek Him out.

All of Romans 8. My favorite parts bold

The Flesh and the Spirit.[a] 1** Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. **3 For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. 6 The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. 7 For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. 12 Consequently, brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Children of God Through Adoption.** 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba,[c] Father!” 16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Destiny of Glory.[d] 18** I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.** 19 For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; 20 for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; 23 and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance.

26 In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. 27 And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

God’s Indomitable Love in Christ. 28 [e]We know that all things work for good for those who love God,[f] who are called according to his purpose. 29 [g]For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

31 [h]What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. 34 Who will condemn? It is Christ [Jesus] who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we are being slain all the day;
we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth,[j] nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.****

For inspirational writing, I find that the prayer of St Francis of Assisi is wonderful. It helps us to focus on external things and is a truly great guide for daily life. Another thing I find inspirational is Our Lord’s Passion. I prefer to read it in the form of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary as it breaks down His Passion step by step and gives us real insight into what He really went through, and why. Although, of course, I realize that we all feel inspired in different ways… like watching Rocky reach the top of the steps etc, or watching achievement videos on youtube.

I recommend participating in the sacrament of reconciliation and the sacrament in the Holy Mass. I think those are truly uplifting things. Although the sacraments aren’t intended as a specific cure for depression, they may be just what you need.

I believe that offering up our burdens in prayer can be of great benefit for ourselves and for others, and it can help us to alter our perspective of our burdens, too.

Other things that I find useful for avoiding depression are exercising and finding productive tasks to do each day, as well as making time to chat with (and focus on) others… usually family members, but that’s still helpful. 🙂

Sorry I don’t have many inspiration writings, as such, to offer you. I do find some poems, like Rudyard Kipling’s If, and Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, quite inspiring too though.

Edit: Err, I just reread what you wrote and you asked for inspiration in the bible verses, so I completely missed your point… but I do find some bible verses inspirational too. John 14: 6, Isaiah 25: 8, John 1: 1-18, 1 John 1: 1-10 These are the ones that spring to mind. 🙂

The Psalms are another rich source for inspiration. It seems to me there is not a situation common to us that is not in some way addressed in the Psalms. For feelings of depression, I always think of Psalm 43:

“Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
Oh, send out your light and your truth; let them lead me…
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall praise Him again, my savior and my God.”

Now, if a few Bible verses can lift your spirits, that is a blessing indeed! However, if you still feel depressed, as others here have said and I’m sure you know, do not hesitate to use the other means God has given us for dealing with this. May God bless you and lift your sprits!

Thank you so much everyone.

I was emotional after mass last night with all the depression and fall outs but Father said a prayer and it came true, thanks be to God and you wonderful posters for pointing me in the right direction!

God bless

What good news. Thanks for letting us know about your answered prayer.
God bless you as well.

I have started reading the book of Job and I must thank everyone again for the suggestions. At our last RCIA session I learned in depth about the Nicene Creed and next it’s the Our Father.

It really feels like God is communicating with me, I have bad spells but I know I can reply on him 🙂

This might help
28 Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

And the same in musical form from Handel’s Messiah

Also
25 For I am sure that my Redeemer liveth, and he shall stand the last on the earth.
26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet shall I see God in my flesh.
Job 19:25-26

And the same sung by Gladys Knight

I like Psalm 23:

The LORD is my shepherd;
there is nothing I lack.
In green pastures he makes me lie down;
to still waters he leads me;
He restores my soul.
He guides me along right paths
for the sake of his name.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff comfort me.
You set a table before me
in front of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
for endless days.
