There is no need to open the tin (you said he is afraid). He can bring the tin as is and right away to a parish and give it to the priest, informing him of its contents. It is important to properly handle the tin (purify the tin of particles), and the priest will do all that.

It would not be correct to wait until Saturday confession to handle this. This should be handled right away.
OP: follow this advice.

****Thank you everyone for your responses -

I informed him to take it to a priest Immediately and he said he will

You guys are all great as always

GOD BLESS!****
I would go with, ensuring safe arrival to a priest.

👍

Thank you. Someone gets it.

Jesus isn’t the boogeyman. He isn’t out to get you. I don’t know why anyone would be afraid to open the tin. Unless of course you think that in addition to putting it in a tin and hiding it away for years, the girlfriend also used the tin as maracas and shook it all around. 🤷 And even then, open it over the garden. Any pieces that fall out, will go back into the ground. Perfect. 👍 (If there is anything in tin.)
Thanks for your comment. You are spot-on These overly-technical responses of taking the host to a priest are just wrong.

It’s just like those who ask what one should do it a host is dropped during communion? Pick it up and consume it! Don’t worry about “self-communion!” Don’t worry about particles that cannot be seen without a microscope! Put it up and consume it!

Is something wrong with your pyx? I ask that very seriously. This doesn’t happen with my pyx. I often have many Hosts in there, so I actually gently shake it before I open it, so that all the Hosts settle to the bottom, and don’t come tumbling out when opened. I’ve never had a Host or particles get stuck to the latch, hinge, lid, or anywhere. Very rarely there are a few particles laying at the bottom, which, of course, I consume.
Same with my pyx. It holds exactly 5 hosts max. Usually I don’t need that many. But even when I’ve had 5 in there going to the nursing home, and had to break some hosts in half for some older people who couldn’t swallow the whole thing, I’ve never ended up with particles stuck to the latch etc.

If I do have a very ‘crumbs’ in the bottom, I use a little holy water to wash them out and then drink it.

I use my pxy every week and it’s a ‘hand me down’.

This is such a delicate and rare occasion that it is barely ever heard of: someone realizing that the Blessed Sacrament is in his house. How does it offer reparation to the grave offense done to the Lord to simply consume the host, perhaps without even letting an ordained minister know what happened or what is going on? This is not a Holy Mass where the Lord is giving Himself to you through His minister.

We should not confuse the two things. If the priest has given you the Host and it fell - which, by the way, is not supposed to happen, and it probably would not if only we were kneeling and receiving the Host on the tongue (which is as allowed as receiving the Lord on our unworthy hands), or if there was an altar server holding a Communion Plate - then I do not think that picking His sacred Body from the floor and consuming it would be an act of self-communion.

Don’t you think prudence would dictate that one open the tin just to be sure there WAS a host in there? This story is so strange I would want proof before I took an Altoid box to a priest to open and claim there was a host inside. How does the person know the GF wasn’t making it up?

If there is a host in there, probably not much happened to it if it was kept in a dry place.

I don’t own my own pyx. I use the one provided by the parish. There are several of them, all identical. They seem to behave the same way, so I assume it is not broken. Ah, I remember now, it was our older set of pyxes where there was part of the latch mechanism where a small particle can wedge itself. Purification (water) floats it away from the mechanism when this happens.

There are usually particles at the bottom if I have had to divide hosts. But some days I wonder if the pyx had not been thoroughly purified before I received it. I always purify it, but perhaps other do not.

Also, my ability to see particles may be related to my nearsightedness. I see very well at close range. So perhaps only I see the particles?

No, like I’ve said, you can never be too safe with the Eucharist.

Immediately pick up the host and consume it!

Open the tin, if the host is present, consume it.

Purify the tin with water that is either consumed or poured onto ground where no one walks.

I’m not sure why people want to make such a song and dance out of it? Safeguard Jesus Christ and forget about putting on a show.

Find a Catholic, any Catholic who is prepared to receive Holy Communion. Have them reverently consume the host. Purify the tin. Done.

No song and dance. No excuse me, “reparations” except for reverently receiving Holy Communion and in the process safeguarding Jesus Christ.

I gotta say. You need to print-out your comments above to talk them over with a good priest… 😦

If you really see something in my comments that requires spiritual direction, I will talk to my confessor about them this week, but could you kindly explain which part particularly deserves attention? I would really be thankful if you wished to share your personal opinion via PM.

All I was trying to say is that - not knowing the norms for this circumstance - it seemed to me that it was not appropriate to just consume the Host. Others seemed to express a similar opinion. Of course if the Host falls during Holy Communion we immediately pick it up and consume it, this is a different case.

I have no authority in the matter, I just post my thoughts in the hope that they be of some contribution…I just consider the Blessed Sacrament worthy of the greatest adoration, and I also believe that a priest’s hands, by virtue of the Holy Orders, are particularly consecrated for handling the Body of Christ, certainly more than my poor hands are…also, who am I to make such decisions? Who am I to know whether there needs to be a formal prayer of reparation or not? I simply think one of the Lord’s presbyters should make these decisions.

Might want to start here with your Spiritual Director.
A priests hands are not consecrated to handle the Eucharist, they are consecrated to confect the Eucharist. A Deacon is an Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion and his hands are not consecrated.

This is the problem with threads like this, there is so much mis-information that gets thrown around like fact, that the truth is often tossed aside.

Please let us get things straight. I am not throwing around information like fact, I clearly stated that (a) I was simply posting my thoughts and (b) that was simply a personal belief I held.

Confecting the Eucharist is also handling the Eucharist, right? And a Deacon has also received the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Nevertheless, I did not claim that only those who have received the Holy Orders are the only ones with authority to handle the Bread of Life, given that we have extraordinary ministers that are lay faithful, and given that we are allowed to receive the Holy Communion in our hands. But there would seem to be a very close relationship between the ordained priesthood and the Eucharist, more than that with the common priesthood.
CCC 1548 In the ecclesial service of the ordained minister, it is Christ himself who is present to his Church as Head of his Body, Shepherd of his flock, high priest of the redemptive sacrifice, Teacher of Truth. This is what the Church means by saying that the priest, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, acts in persona Christi Capitis

You’re exactly right. Even then an Eastern Catholic or Eastern Orthodox priests’ hands are not consecrated yet they are certainly able to confect the Eucharist.

Far too often it seems people brew-up personally held beliefs on their own (or they pick them up on forums like this one) that are in no way backed up by the teachings of the Church. I think these beliefs in many ways make them feel like “better Catholics” when they follow them and that’s just folly.

Things get bad when these made-up beliefs prevent a them from doing the right things – in this case reverently consuming or dissolving the consecrated host and purifying the tin.
