I’m a convert to the faith and as such a lot of the customs and practices a typical Catholic would grow up with is foreign to me. I was hoping there was a book someone could recommend that gave some ideas for creating a Catholic home with traditions and things to do with the kids. I want to pass on memories to my kids that are steeped in Catholic traditions (not just the secular ones of our seasons).

I’m not sure you’ll get what you want from a book. It would be better to ask around what sorts of family traditions people have had related to Catholicism. Here on CAF would be a great place to ask, however, traditions would probably vary region to region.

I grew up in a German Catholic family in a mostly, culturally, German city in Ohio. We had an advent wreath every year as well as a yule log, with candles, made of Birch. We also got a small treat in our stockings on St. Nicholas day (Dec. 6). In the spring, during Lent, we (even the kids) would chose something to give up, usually candy for the kids, beer for Dad? Of course, going to Mass every Sunday, and usually having something associated with that; the only time my mother would make a big breakfast was after mass on Sunday.

Hope this helps, maybe others will share their memorable childhood experiences, or current ones too.

This is an interesting topic. My first thought is that Catholic family traditions are probably closely tied to family ethnic traditions.

The Little Oratory is a good resource for prayer traditions. I also have a book The Catholic Home that has a lot of information and fun ideas.

I like these because they are straightforward and practical and suited to families. 👍 I’m a convert and my husband grew up without many religious traditions in the home, so it’s nice to have something in the absence of culture that’s ordinarily passed down.

Ann Ball wrote several books along this line: Catholic Traditions in the Home and Classroom, The How-to Book of Sacramentals, A Handbook of Catholic Sacramentals, Catholic Traditions in Cooking, and Catholic Traditions in the Garden.

Some of the recipes in the cooking book weren’t well written, but I don’t think Ann Ball wrote those. Don’t know where my copy is to check on that.

I don’t know if this is what you were looking for or not. I think the suggestions upthread are very good but might be overwhelming so I recommend The Catholic Grout List as a jumping off point. You can read more about the history of these traditions in the resources others have suggested. 🙂
