British historian Michael Wood, who trekked through the Andes and Afghanistan in past PBS series, roams England’s gentle countryside in search of the Bard in this four-part biography. Part 1 covers Shakespeare’s childhood, when political landscape was anything but gentle. It was the height of “the Tudor cultural revolution,” Wood says, and Will was growing up in a Protestant “police state.” Great grist for a writer’s mill, particularly one whose family might be Catholic.

I saw this when originally broadcast in the UK several years ago, and whether or not one has a vested interest in the Protestant police state of late-Tudor England (FWIW I think it’s a fair description)
  • it’s a very good, well structured and informative series and well worth a watch - like anything Michael Wood makes.

I will have to look for this. I have not heard of it.

There was another program on PBS the other night about Shakespeare with Ethan Hawke. Discussing MacBeth.
 
One of our priests told of the setting of the story
of Romeo and Juliet being based on the feud
between a Catholic and Protestant family!

I wonder if that is true. I have not heard that theory.
